Cicero Fire Department honors firefighters who saved homeowner’s life
Town President Larry Dominick and the Town of Cicero Board of Trustees, and the Town of Cicero Fire Department, presented honors to four fire fighters for saving the life of a woman who was trapped in a burning apartment building last February.
Fire Chief Jeff Penzkofer said that firefighters responded to an emergency fire call on Feb. 16, 2024 at 8 PM at 2123 55th Court, a four story apartment building with more than 30 units.
“The first responders immediately saw a woman who was leaning out of a window on the fourth floor with flames all around her and they immediately responded by raising the ladder to reach her,” Penzkofer said.
“But as they were raising the ladder to reach her, she backed out of the window and disappeared into the smoke and the flames.”
Penzkofer, joined by Dep fire chief Jonathan Sochacki, said a second team of firefighters carried a water hose up through the back entrance of the building four floor. They discovered the frightened woman and rescued her.
“It is kind of like the pinnacle for us at the Fire Department. It doesn’t get any better than a life being saved because of some courageous act by our firefighters with the sense of urgency and just doing things the right way,” Penzkofer told the Town Board at its meeting Tuesday May 28, 2024.
“They put their lives in danger to save another life.”
The four firefighters who were honored are: Lt. Bradley Erickson; Matthew J. Lopresti; James Siciliano; and Jay Cranston.
Erickson, who rescued the victim from inside the building, received the Medal of Valor. And Lopresti, Siciliano and Cranston received Citation for an Incident reflecting Bravery, Courage and Honor for the Fire Department.
“I always say that the Cicero Fire Department and the Cicero Police Department are the best that any community can have,” President Dominick said.

El Departamento de Bomberos de Cicero honra a los bomberos que salvaron la vida de una propietaria.
El presidente municipal Larry Dominick y la Junta de Síndicos de la ciudad de Cicero, junto con el Departamento de Bomberos de Cicero, presentaron honores a cuatro bomberos por salvar la vida de una mujer que estaba atrapada en un edificio de apartamentos en llamas el pasado febrero.
El jefe de bomberos Jeff Penzkofer dijo que los bomberos respondieron a una llamada de emergencia por incendio el 16 de febrero de 2024 a las 8 PM en 2123 55th Court, un edificio de apartamentos de cuatro pisos con más de 30 unidades.
“Los primeros en responder vieron de inmediato a una mujer que estaba asomada por una ventana en el cuarto piso con llamas a su alrededor y respondieron inmediatamente levantando la escalera para alcanzarla”, dijo Penzkofer.
“Pero mientras levantaban la escalera para alcanzarla, ella retrocedió por la ventana y desapareció entre el humo y las llamas”.
Penzkofer, acompañado por el subjefe de bomberos Jonathan Sochacki, dijo que un segundo equipo de bomberos subió una manguera de agua por la entrada trasera del edificio hasta el cuarto piso. Descubrieron a la mujer asustada y la rescataron.
“Es como el pináculo para nosotros en el Departamento de Bomberos. No hay nada mejor que salvar una vida gracias a un acto valiente de nuestros bomberos con un sentido de urgencia y simplemente haciendo las cosas de la manera correcta”, dijo Penzkofer a la Junta Municipal en su reunión del martes 28 de mayo de 2024.
“Pusieron sus vidas en peligro para salvar otra vida”.
Los cuatro bomberos que fueron honrados son: el teniente Bradley Erickson; Matthew J. Lopresti; James Siciliano; y Jay Cranston.
Erickson, quien rescató a la víctima dentro del edificio, recibió la Medalla al Valor. Y Lopresti, Siciliano y Cranston recibieron una Citación por un Incidente que refleja Valentía, Coraje y Honor para el Departamento de Bomberos.
“Siempre digo que el Departamento de Bomberos de Cicero y el Departamento de Policía de Cicero son los mejores que cualquier comunidad puede tener”, dijo el presidente Dominick.
