Cicero celebrates the Day of the Dead
On Friday, October 28, 2023, at the Unity School in Cicero, the annual Day of the Dead celebration was held. The celebration, which has become a tradition in our community, is being held under the auspices of District 99, the Town of Cicero and the Mexican Cultural Committee of Cicero, in addition to the participation of The Cicero Public Library and sponsors that this year included Tortillería el Rey, El Patrón, Araceli’s Bakery, Paraiso Bakery , El Porvenir Bakery and Gabriel Studio.
The “Alebrijes” was the theme of this year, under the direction of their teachers, students from the schools belonging to District 99 made beautiful and creative shapes of these figures that represent the color and mysticism of Mexican culture, which were exhibited during the celebration of the Day of the Dead. Made with paper and glue (a form of glue made with water and flour) and vivid colors with acrylic paint, each “Alebrije” encapsulates the creativity and patience of its creator.
“We are very happy and proud to be with the families of the District 99 students,” said District 99 Supervisor Aldo Calderin, “they did an excellent job and we congratulate all the students who participated in this activity. We will continue to work with the Cicero community by sharing these beautiful traditions.”
In addition to the exhibition, families attending the event were able to enjoy entertainment that included the mariachi of Morton East, folkloric ballet Tlaloc and the presence of Alexandra Salgado who performed the most popular songs of the late artist Selena. Participating organizations gave books, gifts and information to attendees and there were tables with workshops for children.
Families had the opportunity to take pictures and take them home, courtesy of Gabriel Studio. Cicero Fiestas Patria Queen Emily Apango and Princess Maylin Zacarias, both representatives of Cicero’s Mexican community and the Cicero Mexican Cultural Committee, were on hand giving away books courtesy of the Office of President Larry Dominick’s Reading program.
Finally, Maru Ayala, President of the Mexican Cultural Committee of Cicero, thanked the attendees and especially the teachers and students, as well as District 99 and President Larry Dominck for the unconditional support for these activities to take place: “Having the support of President Dominick is fundamental for our committee, since it allows us to share and present Mexican culture in all its splendor,” she commented, we thank all the people and organizations that made this event possible and the Cicero community we invite them to continue participating in these events that aim to bring together the families of Cicero. The Day of the Dead Ofrenda is at the Cicero Public Library, you can go see it and put up the pictures of your loved ones.”
El pasado viernes 28 de Octubre, en la Unity School de Cicero, se llevó a cabo la anual celebración del Dia de Muertos. La celebración, que se ha convertido en toda una tradición en nuestra comunidad, se lleva a cabo con el auspicio del Distrito 99, La ciudad de Cicero y El Comité Cultural Mexicano de Cicero, además de la participación de La biblioteca pública de Cicero y los patrocinadores que este año incluyeron a Tortillería el Rey, El Patrón, Araceli’s Bakery, Paraíso Bakery y Panadería el Porvenir y Gabriel Studio.
Los “Alebrijes” fue el tema de este año, bajo la dirección de sus maestros, estudiantes de las escuelas pertenecientes al Distrito 99 realizaron hermosas y creativas formas de estas figuras que representan el colorido y lo místico de la cultura mexicana, mismas que fueron exhibidas durante la celebración del Dia de Muertos. Elaboradas con papel y engrudo (una forma de pegamento que se hace con agua y harina) y vivos colores con pintura acrílica, cada “Alebrije” encierra la creatividad y paciencia de su creador.
“Estamos muy contentos y orgullosos de estar con las familias de los estudiantes del Distrito 99”, dijo Aldo Calderin, Supervisor del Distrito 99, “hicieron unos trabajos excelentes y felicitamos a todos los estudiantes que participaron en esta actividad. Seguiremos trabajando con la comunidad de Cicero compartiendo estas bonitas tradiciones”.
Además de la exhibición, las familias asistentes al evento pudieron disfrutar del entretenimiento que incluyo a el mariachi de Morton East, ballet folclórico Tlaloc y la presencia de Alexandra Salgado quien interpretó las canciones más populares de la fallecida artista Selena. Organizaciones participantes dieron libros, regalos e información a los asistentes y hubo mesas con talleres para los niños.

La Reina de Las Fiestas Patrias de Cicero Emily Apango y Princesa Maylin Zacarias, ambas representantes de la comunidad mexicana de Cicero y del Comité Cultural Mexicano de Cicero estuvieron presentes obsequiando libros cortesía del programa de Lectura de la Oficina del presidente Larry Dominick.
Finalmente, Maru Ayala, Presidente del Comité Cultural Mexicano de Cicero, agradeció a los asistentes y en especial a los maestros y alumnos, así como al Distrito 99 y al presidente Larry Dominck por el apoyo incondicional para que se lleven a cabo estas actividades: “Contar con el apoyo del presidente Dominick es fundamental para nuestro comité, ya que nos permite compartir y presentar la cultura mexicana en todo su esplendor”, comentó, , agradecemos a todas las personas y organizaciones que hicieron posible este evento y a la comunidad de Cicero los invitamos a seguir participando de estos eventos que tienen como finalidad reunir a las familias de Cicero. La Ofrenda del Dia de Muertos está en la Biblioteca Pública de Cicero, pueden ir a verla y a poner las fotografías de sus seres queridos ”.
