Cicero Public Library receives $27,500 in tech grant funding
On Thursday, June 6 at 11am Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias visited the Cicero Public Library to announce over 100 libraries would receive tech grants. The Cicero Public Library is one of those libraries receiving $27,500.
“It’s a pleasure to join you all at this incredible library today,” said Secretary of State Giannoulias.
“We are here today to announce the allocation of $2 million in new grand funding for technology for libraries in Illinois. We most do more to help our most vulnerable and least resource libraries across Illinois”.
Our libraries serve as pillars of their communities. They provide essential services to our families by facilitating access to information, inspiring ideas, and fostering a passion for lifelong learning that has never changed.
This is the first time the Secretary of States’ office provides grants to libraries.
Giannoulias explained why he decided to provide these grants to the most deserving libraries in Illinois.
“I had the honor of serving on the board of the Chicago Public Libraries under Mayor Emanuel and as we traveled the city and we traveled the state you would see libraries that were inspirational and beautiful and gorgeous and they look like stadiums. Then you go right down the street and you have libraries without air conditioning and lights falling off. That has always stuck with me. Now being able to be the state’s librarian to try and do something to make a dent and to raise awareness has always been very important to me”.
“The Town of Cicero, its President Larry Dominick, and the Town Board of Trustees and myself recognize all the many amazing services offered in Cicero such as the Library are critical to maximizing the services that we provide as local governments to all our citizens,” said Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias
“As a resident of Cicero and also the Town Clerk, we are grateful to the Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias for the grant that is being awarded to the Cicero Library to enhance technology services. We are also grateful to Congressman Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, State Representative Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, Town President Larry Dominick, Mrs. Sandra Tomschin, Director of the Cicero Library and the Library Board members for their leadership”.
“This grant will benefit the modernization by enhancing new technology features that will make it more accessible to our children, families, and the seniors in our community,” Clerk Punzo-Arias added.
“I think that this grant came at the right time because when you think about the renovations that we’ve been having like the makers room, we have some other offices and conference rooms,” said Cicero Library Board President Ismael Vargas.
“Technology will enhance these rooms that we have just made”.
“The next step is spending it,” said Cicero Public Library Director Sandra Thomschin excitedly.
“We just finished the construction of our maker-space. So now we’re gonna be purchasing a 3D printer, a glow force machine, a circuit machine, a sewing machine, an embroidery machine. So we can start giving classes”.
Director Thomsching also shared she was very excited when she found out about the grant.
“I was very excited. I am looking forward to just seeing the smiles on our patrons”.

La Biblioteca Pública de Cicero recibe $27,500 en fondos de subvención tecnológica
El jueves 6 de junio a las 11 am, el Secretario de Estado Alexi Giannoulias visitó la Biblioteca Pública de Cicero para anunciar que más de 100 bibliotecas recibirían subvenciones tecnológicas. La Biblioteca Pública de Cicero es una de esas bibliotecas y recibirá $27,500.
“Es un placer unirme a todos ustedes en esta increíble biblioteca hoy”, dijo el Secretario de Estado Giannoulias.
“Estamos aquí hoy para anunciar la asignación de $2 millones en nuevos fondos de subvención para tecnología para bibliotecas en Illinois. Debemos hacer más para ayudar a nuestras bibliotecas más vulnerables y con menos recursos en todo Illinois”.
Nuestras bibliotecas sirven como pilares de sus comunidades. Proporcionan servicios esenciales a nuestras familias al facilitar el acceso a la información, inspirar ideas y fomentar una pasión por el aprendizaje continuo que nunca ha cambiado.

Giannoulias explicó por qué decidió proporcionar estas subvenciones a las bibliotecas más merecedoras de Illinois.
“Tuve el honor de servir en la junta de las Bibliotecas Públicas de Chicago bajo el alcalde Emanuel y mientras recorríamos la ciudad y el estado, veías bibliotecas que eran inspiradoras, hermosas y espectaculares y parecían estadios. Luego, vas justo por la calle y ves bibliotecas sin aire acondicionado y con las luces cayéndose. Eso siempre se me quedó grabado. Ahora, al poder ser el bibliotecario del estado y tratar de hacer algo para marcar la diferencia y crear conciencia, siempre ha sido muy importante para mí”.
“El Municipio de Cicero, su Presidente Larry Dominick, la Junta de Síndicos del Municipio y yo reconocemos que todos los muchos servicios increíbles ofrecidos en Cicero, como la Biblioteca, son críticos para maximizar los servicios que proporcionamos como gobiernos locales a todos nuestros ciudadanos”, dijo la Secretaria Municipal María Punzo-Arias.
“Como residente de Cicero y también Secretaria Municipal, estamos agradecidos al Secretario de Estado Alexi Giannoulias por la subvención que se otorga a la Biblioteca de Cicero para mejorar los servicios tecnológicos. También estamos agradecidos al Congresista Jesús ‘Chuy’ García, a la Representante Estatal Elizabeth ‘Lisa’ Hernández, al Presidente del Municipio Larry Dominick, a la Sra. Sandra Tomschin, Directora de la Biblioteca de Cicero y a los miembros de la Junta de la Biblioteca por su liderazgo”.
“Esta subvención beneficiará la modernización al mejorar las nuevas características tecnológicas que la harán más accesible para nuestros niños, familias y personas mayores en nuestra comunidad”, añadió la Secretaria Punzo-Arias.
“Creo que esta subvención llegó en el momento adecuado porque cuando piensas en las renovaciones que hemos estado teniendo, como el cuarto de creadores, tenemos algunas otras oficinas y salas de conferencias”, dijo el Presidente de la Junta de la Biblioteca de Cicero, Ismael Vargas.
“La tecnología mejorará estas salas que acabamos de hacer”.
“El siguiente paso es gastarlo”, dijo emocionada la Directora de la Biblioteca Pública de Cicero, Sandra Tomschin.
“Acabamos de terminar la construcción de nuestro espacio de creación. Así que ahora vamos a comprar una impresora 3D, una máquina de corte por láser, una máquina de corte y grabado, una máquina de coser y una máquina de bordado. Así que podemos empezar a dar clases”.
La Directora Tomschin también compartió que estaba muy emocionada cuando se enteró de la subvención.
“Estaba muy emocionada. Estoy ansiosa por ver las sonrisas en nuestros usuarios”.
