Cicero Commemorates birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
Cicero honors Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Town of Cicero holds monthly commemorations and for the month of January President Larry Dominick commemorated Dr. King just like he does every year.
MWRD President Kari Steele is keynote speaker who spoke about the importance of King’s legacy on all people.
The commemoration was held on Wednesday Jan. 17, 2024 at the Cicero Community Center organized by the Town of Cicero Department of Special Events and Director Patti Salerno.
“These monthly meetings and commemorations are particularly important, especially this one, because President Larry Dominick and the board were the first to implement the recognition of King Day in Cicero when he was elected in 2005,” said Ray Hanania Town of Cicero Spokesperson/Communications Director.
“King Day is more than just a day off and rather a representation of the achievements Dr. King made towards civil rights”.
Hanania thanked everyone for attending even with the brutal cold weather. He then introduced the MC of the event, District 201 Superintendent Dr. Tim Truesdale.
Dr. Truesdale asked everyone to please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Right after, he invited Town Chaplain Ismael Vargas for the invocation.
“We recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and life. My heart is grateful for his humble and gentle spirit, for the significant impact he made on America and his inspiring influence in this world,” prayed Vargas.
“It’s interesting that the day is commemorated with school not being in session. There’s so much that there is to learn from someone like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,” said Dr. Truesdale.
“Our goal is to make sure that all the rest of the days of the school year everything we do in our schools does honor the legacy of people like Dr. King”.
The student representative from the Board of Education at Morton East High School, Emily Delgado took the podium.
“Today I would like to talk about one of the most influential figures in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King’s work and legacy continue to inspire and impact people of all ages, including students. Dr. King’s teachings and philosophy of non-violence have been instrumental in shaping the way we think about social justice inequality today,” said Delgado.
“Through his speeches and writings he inspired millions of people to stand up for their rights and fight against injustice. His message was simple, yet powerful, all people are created equal and should be treated with dignity and respect”.
In conclusion, Delgado shared, “at Morton District 201 we’ll continue to celebrate his legacy and we’ll always remember the importance of striving for justice, equality and education for all”.
The Town celebrated MLK Day with guest speaker, Keri Steele, President of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD).
“I am honored to be here today. I want to thank President Dominick and the Town of Cicero for having me here today to honor the legacy of one of America’s greatest heroes, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Steele.
“Dr. King as we know was a hero because he fought for civil rights, which means he fought for the rights for all of us to do whatever we wanted to do”.
In addition, Steele said, “Dr. King fought so we all could have the opportunity to be all we can be regardless of our race, color, creed, religion, and who we love, simply because it wasn’t right”.
Steele informed us of what exactly the MWRD does.
“All the water that leaves your house has to go somewhere. When it leaves your house it goes to one of our seven treatment plants, and we treat that water and clean it up before we release it into the waterways”.
“I literally worked my way up from the bottom as an intern, a water sampler, all the way to become the first black woman president of the board,” shared Steele.
“During King’s Day that would not have happened. Without the work and the dream of Dr. King I would have never been able to dream of being a black girl from the south side of Chicago who ended up being a water chemist,”
Steele pleaded with the students present to please have dreams and then put in the work to make does dreams come true.

Cicero honra al Reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. El Municipio de Cicero celebra conmemoraciones mensuales y durante el mes de enero el Presidente Larry Dominick conmemoró al Dr. King como lo hace todos los años.
“Estas reuniones y conmemoraciones mensuales son particularmente importantes, especialmente ésta, porque el Presidente Larry Dominick y la junta fueron los primeros en implementar el reconocimiento del Día del King en Cicero cuando fue elegido en 2005”, dijo Ray Hanania, portavoz/Director de Comunicaciones.
“King Day es más que un simple día libre y es más bien una representación de los logros que el Dr. King logró en materia de derechos civiles”.
Hanania agradeció a todos por asistir incluso con el brutal clima frío. Luego presentó al MC del evento, el Superintendente del Distrito 201, Dr. Tim Truesdale.
El Dr. Truesdale pidió a todos que por favor defendieran el Juramento a la Bandera. Acto seguido invitó al capellán del municipio, Ismael Vargas, a la invocación.
“Reconocemos el cumpleaños y la vida del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mi corazón está agradecido por su espíritu humilde y gentil, por el impacto significativo que tuvo en Estados Unidos y su influencia inspiradora en este mundo”, oró Vargas.
“Es interesante que el día se conmemora sin que haya clases. Hay mucho que aprender de alguien como el Dr. Martin Luther King Jr”, dijo el Dr. Truesdale.
“Nuestro objetivo es asegurarnos de que el resto de los días del año escolar, todo lo que hagamos en nuestras escuelas honre el legado de personas como el Dr. King”.
La representante estudiantil de la Junta de Educación de la secundaria Morton East, Emily Delgado subió al podio.
“Hoy me gustaría hablar sobre una de las figuras más influyentes de la historia de Estados Unidos, el Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. El trabajo y el legado del Dr. King continúan inspirando e impactando a personas de todas las edades, incluidos los estudiantes. Las enseñanzas y la filosofía de la no violencia del Dr. King han sido fundamentales para dar forma a la forma en que pensamos hoy sobre la desigualdad en la justicia social”, dijo Delgado.
“A través de sus discursos y escritos, inspiró a millones de personas a defender sus derechos y luchar contra la injusticia. Su mensaje fue simple, pero poderoso: todas las personas son creadas iguales y deben ser tratadas con dignidad y respeto”.
En conclusión, compartió Delgado, “en el Distrito 201 de Morton continuaremos celebrando su legado y siempre recordaremos la importancia de luchar por la justicia, la igualdad y la educación para todos”.
El Municipio celebró el Día de MLK con la oradora invitada, Keri Steele, Presidenta del Distrito Metropolitano de Recuperación de Agua (MWRD).
“Me siento honrada de estar aquí hoy. Quiero agradecer al Presidente Dominick y al Municipio de Cicero por invitarme aquí hoy para honrar el legado de uno de los héroes más grandes de Estados Unidos, el reverendo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”, dijo Steele.
“Dr. King, como sabemos, fue un héroe porque luchó por los derechos civiles, lo que significa que luchó por el derecho de todos nosotros a hacer lo que quisiéramos”.
Además, Steele dijo: “Dr. King luchó para que todos pudiéramos tener la oportunidad de ser todo lo que podemos ser, sin importar nuestra raza, color, credo, religión y a quién amamos, simplemente porque no estaba bien”.
Steele nos informó qué hace exactamente el MWRD.
“Toda el agua que sale de tu casa tiene que ir a algún lado. Cuando sale de tu casa va a una de nuestras siete plantas de tratamiento, tratamos esa agua y la limpiamos antes de verterla a los cursos de agua”.
“Literalmente trabajé desde abajo como pasante, tomando muestras de agua, hasta convertirme en la primera mujer negra presidenta de la junta”, compartió Steele.
“Durante el día de King eso no habría sucedido. Sin el trabajo y el sueño del Dr. King nunca hubiera podido soñar con ser una chica negra del sur de Chicago que terminó siendo química de agua”,
Steele suplicó a los estudiantes presentes que por favor tuvieran sueños y luego se esfuercen para hacerlos realidad.
