Record crowds attend Cicero’s annual Mexican Independence celebrations
Nearly 31,000 people attended the Town of Cicero’s annual Mexican Independence Day celebrations which began on Thursday Sept. 14 at Cicero Community Park, and ended with a record crowd enjoying the parade on Sunday, Sept. 17 on Cermak Road and El Grito later that same evening.
Held at Cicero Community park, 34th and Laramie, the festival features live music, food, carnival ridesgames and giveaways.
Town President Larry Dominick, who rode in the parade on a retired and renovated Fire Truck, said he was very happy that the community residents enjoyed the festival and did not experience many of the problems that plagued other festivals including in nearby Chicago.
“We had a new ride this year, no Cadillac Convertible. We had a Fire Truck that’s not in service any more. It’s like 20 years old and our mechanic shop Danny Wolf and his guys fixed it up like brand new and we had a good time up there. It’s a lot better view,” said Cicero Town President Larry Dominick who was joined by his family on top of the retired Cicero Fire Truck.
“I want to thank everyone in our Special Events Department for organizing this so well.”
After the parade President Dominick and his wife, first lady Diana Dominick, the director if the Town’s Senior Center, handed out bracelets all afternoon to children at the festival. President Dominick handed out more tha 4,000 wristbands for every carnival which allows children to enjoy most of the carnival rides free-of-charge.
“Everybody’s independence is important and since we got a huge Spanish population I want to show them that I’m part of them and that we celebrate and I wish them all a good time when they come here. As you can see the festival is over packed. We had a great parade. I’m proud I could do it. I see a lot of smiling kids’ faces and that’s what I like,” said President Dominick.
The Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago joined the Cicero Mexican Cultural Committee for our annual El Grito. The Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago Deputy Council Gerardo Guerrero gave the official El Grito.
“There is no place like Cicero. We are very excited for being here. This is actually the largest El Grito that we have seen so far,” said the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago Council of Community Affairs Claudia Castillo. There are over 17 Fiestas Patrias and El Gritos they attend.
All of the Town’s officials participated in the festival celebrating Mexican American heritage including Town Supervisor Joe Virruso, Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias, Assessor Emilio “Emo” Cundari, Collector Fran Reitz, and trustees Bob Porod, Victor Garcia, John Cava and Blanca Vargas.
“We do this every year and we want to make sure that we keep up the tradition of all the heritage in the Town. In Cicero we do it all,” said Town Assessor Emilio “Emo” Cundari, who welcomed everyone saying, “bienvenidos a Cicero”!
Cundari added, “Everybody’s having a great time. We had an awesome parade today. Everything went really well. The weather cooperated. Tonight our festival is packed and everybody’s having a great time”.
Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar shares President Dominick has always been supportive of the Cicero Mexican Cultural Committee.
“President Larry Dominick has been very supportive since the beginning since 2006 when we founded the Cicero Mexican Cultural Committee,” said Commissioner Aguilar.
“There has been a lot of celebrations throughout the Midwest, but this is the biggest in the Midwest. Cicero made an international impact. We’re glad to be here it’s a wonderful event. Let’s celebrate as respectfully, responsibly and as safely as we can.”
Town Trustee Blanca Vargas shared how proud she is of Town President Dominick celebrating her culture for so many years.
“I am very proud to participate in a function that we have done for many years. These are the roots of our independence of Mexico. We have been celebrating with pride and with discipline to make sure that our community is happy,” said Trustee Vargas.
“I am very proud to be Mexican. President Larry Dominick wishes everyone to be happy. Viva Mexico Que Viva”!
El Grito concluded the festivities with over 11,000 people attending this year.

Una multitud récord asistió a las celebraciones anuales de la Independencia de México en Cicero
Casi 31,000 personas asistieron a las celebraciones anuales del Día de la Independencia de México del municipio de Cicero, que comenzaron el jueves 14 de septiembre en el Parque Comunitario de Cicero y terminaron con una multitud récord disfrutando del desfile el domingo 17 de septiembre en la Calle Cermak y El Grito esa misma noche.
Celebrado en el Parque Comunitario de Cicero, en la 34ª y Laramie, el festival cuenta con música en vivo, comida, juegos de feria y regalos.
El Presidente Municipal Larry Dominick, quien participó en el desfile en un camión de bomberos retirado y renovado, dijo que estaba muy contento de que los residentes de la comunidad disfrutaran del festival y no tuvieran muchos de los problemas que afectaron a otros festivales, incluidos los de la cercana Chicago.
“Este año tuvimos un nuevo vehículo en el desfile, no un Cadillac convertible. Tuvimos un camión de bomberos que ya no está en servicio, tiene como 20 años, y nuestro taller mecánico, Danny Wolf y su equipo, lo arreglaron como nuevo, y nos la pasamos muy bien arriba. La vista es mucho mejor”, dijo el Presidente Municipal de Cicero, Larry Dominick, quien estuvo acompañado de su familia en la parte superior del camión de bomberos retirado de Cicero.
“Quiero agradecer a todos en nuestro Departamento de Eventos Especiales por organizarlo tan bien”.
Después del desfile, el Presidente Dominick y su esposa, la primera dama Diana Dominick, directora del Centro de Ancianos del municipio, repartieron pulseras toda la tarde a los niños en el festival. El Presidente Dominick entregó más de 4,000 pulseras para cada feria, lo que permite a los niños disfrutar de la mayoría de las atracciones de la feria de forma gratuita.
“La independencia de todos es importante, y dado que tenemos una gran población hispana, quiero mostrarles que soy parte de ellos y que celebramos, y les deseo a todos que se diviertan cuando vienen aquí. Como pueden ver, el festival está abarrotado. Tuvimos un gran desfile. Estoy orgulloso de haberlo hecho. Veo muchas caras de niños sonrientes, y eso es lo que me gusta”, dijo el Presidente Dominick.
El Consulado General de México en Chicago se unió al Comité Cultural Mexicano de Cicero para nuestro anual El Grito. El Cónsul General de México en Chicago, Gerardo Guerrero, dio el Grito oficial.
“No hay lugar como Cicero. Estamos muy emocionados de estar aquí. Este es el El Grito más grande que hemos visto hasta ahora”, dijo Claudia Castillo, Consejo de Asuntos Comunitarios del Cónsul General de México en Chicago. Participan en más de 17 Fiestas Patrias y El Gritos.
Todos los funcionarios del Municipio participaron en el festival para celebrar la herencia mexicanoamericana, incluyendo al Supervisor del Municipio Joe Virruso, la Secretaria Maria Punzo-Arias, el Tasador Emilio ‘Emo’ Cundari, el Recaudador Fran Reitz y los síndicos Bob Porod, Victor Garcia, John Cava y Blanca Vargas.”
“Hacemos esto cada año y queremos asegurarnos de mantener la tradición de todas las herencias en el municipio. En Cicero lo hacemos todo”, dijo el Asesor Municipal Emilio “Emo” Cundari, quien dio la bienvenida a todos diciendo: “bienvenidos a Cicero”.
Cundari añadió: “Todos se están divirtiendo mucho. Tuvimos un desfile impresionante hoy. Todo salió muy bien. El clima cooperó. Esta noche nuestro festival está lleno y todos se están divirtiendo mucho”.
El Comisionado del Condado de Cook, Frank Aguilar, comparte que el Presidente Dominick siempre ha apoyado al Comité Cultural Mexicano de Cicero.
“El Presidente Larry Dominick ha sido muy solidario desde el principio, desde 2006 cuando fundamos el Comité Cultural Mexicano de Cicero”, dijo el Comisionado Aguilar.
“Ha habido muchas celebraciones en todo el Medio Oeste, pero esta es la más grande del Medio Oeste. Cicero ha tenido un impacto internacional. Estamos contentos de estar aquí, es un evento maravilloso. Celebremos de manera respetuosa, responsable y segura”.
La Fideicomisaria del municipio, Blanca Vargas, compartió cuán orgullosa está de que el Presidente Municipal Dominick celebre su cultura durante tantos años.
“Estoy muy orgullosa de participar en una función que hemos realizado durante muchos años. Estas son las raíces de nuestra independencia de México. Hemos estado celebrando con orgullo y con disciplina para asegurarnos de que nuestra comunidad esté feliz”, dijo la Fideicomisaria Vargas.
“Estoy muy orgullosa de ser mexicana. El Presidente Larry Dominick desea que todos estén felices. ¡Viva México que viva!”.
El Grito concluyó las festividades con más de 11,000 personas asistiendo este año.
