Cicero celebrates Lithuanian Independence and Presidents Day
The Town of Cicero celebrated the important settlement of Lithuanian immigrants there and the nation’s Independence Day at a commemoration held at the Cicero Community Center on Wednesday.
Cicero officials and community leaders honored both Lithuanian Independence Day and President’s Day at the event which featured remarks by Lithuanian activist Alvida Baukus. Baukus is the daughter of longtime Lithuanian community leader Mindy Baukus.
Ms. Alvida Baukus presented an overview of Lithuanian culture and heritage which dates back more than 700 years.
“Even before Lithuania declared its independence the first time on February 16, 1918, many Lithuanians had already called Cicero home. They immigrated here significantly after the Second World War and even after the re-establishment of the Democratic State of Lithuania on March 11, 1990,” Baukus said.
“St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Grant Works was founded by Lithuanian immigrants and was consecrated by blessed George Matulaitis of Lithuania in 1926. Mass in the Lithuanian language is still held weekly on Sundays at 8:45 AM.”
Matulaitis, who died in 1927, was considered an important historical figure in the Catholic Church. He was Beatified on June 28, 1987 by Pope John Paul II.
“Once again it is a privilege to jointly share the commemorations of Presidents Day and the restoration of Lithuanian Independence,” Baukus told the more than 150 people who gathered in the Cicero Community Center.
Baukus introduced Mrs. Milda Satas, president of the Cicero Lithuanian Community, also expressed her gratitude to President Dominick and the Cicero Board and community for recognizing Lithuanian contributions to the Town of Cicero. Joining Satas and Baukus were Audra Bernotavicius, Gintare Janus, Ramutis and Nijole Rubas, Mindaugas Bielskus, Saulius and Roma Kuprys, and Virgis Rukuiza.
Anthony Grazzini, grant administrator for Elementary School District 99, served as the event emcee.
Cicero Trustee Blanca Vargas welcomed attendees on behalf of Town President Larry Dominick and the Town Board.
“The Board or Trustees and our President Larry Dominick thanks everyone for our diversity. We have everyone. Lithuanian. Mexican. Irish and every ethnic group,” said Vargas who attended St. Anthony Church.
Students from High School District 201 and Elementary School District 99 addressed the gathering to commemorate Presidents Day. They included teachers and students from the 7th Grade class Morton Junior High and from Morton East HS.
A display of Lithuanian culture was created and is on display in the Cicero Community Center. And the Lithuanian flag was flown in the Cicero Courtyard that week to recognize the nation’s independence.

Cicero celebra la Independencia de Lituania y el Día de los Presidentes
El Municipio de Cicero celebró el importante asentamiento de inmigrantes lituanos allí y el Día de la Independencia de la nación en una conmemoración realizada en el Centro Comunitario de Cicero el miércoles.
Los funcionarios de Cicero y los líderes comunitarios honraron tanto el Día de la Independencia de Lituania como el Día de los Presidentes en el evento que contó con los comentarios de la activista lituana Alvida Baukus. Baukus es la hija de Mindy Baukus, líder de la comunidad lituana desde hace mucho tiempo.
La Sra. Alvida Baukus presentó una descripción general de la cultura y el patrimonio lituano que se remonta a más de 700 años.
“Incluso antes de que Lituania declarara su independencia por primera vez el 16 de febrero de 1918, muchos lituanos ya habían llamado a Cicero su hogar. Emigraron aquí de manera significativa después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial e incluso después del restablecimiento del Estado Democrático de Lituania el 11 de marzo 1990”, dijo Baukus.
“La iglesia católica St. Anthony of Padua en “Grant Works” fue fundada por inmigrantes lituanos y fue consagrada por el beato George Matulaitis de Lituania en 1926. La misa en lituano todavía se lleva a cabo semanalmente los domingos a las 8:45 a.m.”.
Matulaitis, quien murió en 1927, fue considerado una figura histórica importante en la Iglesia Católica. Fue Beatificado el 28 de junio de 1987 por el Papa Juan Pablo II.
“Una vez más, es un privilegio compartir conjuntamente las conmemoraciones del Día de los Presidentes y la restauración de la independencia lituana”, dijo Baukus a las más de 150 personas que se reunieron en el Centro Comunitario de Cicero.
Baukus presentó a la Sra. Anthony Grazzini, administrador de subvenciones del Distrito Escolar Primario 99, fue el maestro de ceremonias del evento.
La síndica de Cicero, Blanca Vargas, dio la bienvenida a los asistentes en nombre del Presidente del Municipio, Larry Dominick, y la junta directiva.
“La Junta Directiva y nuestro Presidente Larry Dominick agradecen a todos por nuestra diversidad. Tenemos a todos. Lituanos, mexicanos, irlandeses y de todos los grupos étnicos”, dijo Vargas, quien asistía a la Iglesia St. Anthony.
Los estudiantes del Distrito de Escuelas Secundarias 201 y del Distrito de Escuelas Primarias 99 se dirigieron a la reunión para conmemorar el Día de los Presidentes. Incluyeron maestros y estudiantes de la clase de 7º grado Morton Junior High y de Morton East HS.
Se creó una exhibición de la cultura lituana y se exhibe en el Centro Comunitario de Cicero. Y la bandera lituana ondeó en el patio de Cicero esa semana para reconocer la independencia de la nación.
