It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and inspiration as Town of Cicero President Larry Dominick visited Sherlock Elementary School on May 18 to participate in Career Day and share his lifelong commitment to public service with students.

Joined by Deputy Dominic Schullo of the Cicero Police Department, President Dominick spent the morning speaking with fourth-grade and kindergarten students about leadership, government, public safety, and what it means to serve the community.

From the moment he arrived, President Dominick connected with the students through stories, humor, and heartfelt advice. He shared his own journey, explaining that he began working for the Town of Cicero in 1970 in the Public Works Department before becoming a Cicero police officer in 1984. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become First Deputy Superintendent before eventually running for and being elected Town President.

He also told students about his years as a Little League coach, spending two decades helping young athletes learn teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

The students listened attentively and eagerly participated throughout the presentation. The fourth graders and kindergartners had no shortage of questions, and President Dominick welcomed every one of them.

When a student asked, “Who is the most important person you have ever met?” President Dominick smiled and answered, “You guys!”

The response drew smiles and excitement throughout the room.

Another student asked how difficult it is to make a law.

“It is very hard,” President Dominick explained, discussing the amount of work, planning, and cooperation required to make decisions that affect a community.

When asked what the most important part of his job is, President Dominick answered without hesitation.

“Safety,” he said. “I’m for a strong police force because keeping our residents safe is always our top priority.”

Students were also curious about what makes him most proud as Town President.

“A lot,” Dominick replied. “We have accomplished so much.”

He pointed to the many improvements and developments throughout Cicero, including infrastructure projects, economic development, community services, public safety initiatives, park improvements, and investments in schools and neighborhoods that continue to strengthen the community.

One student asked if he approves the buildings being built throughout town.

“Yes,” he said. “Look at this school. It’s a great school.”

The kindergartners were especially amazed when President Dominick explained that the Town of Cicero manages and balances an annual budget of approximately $200 million. Many listened with wide eyes as he described how those funds help provide services and programs that benefit residents every day.

Students also wanted to know if being Town President is difficult.

“Yes,” Dominick answered. “It’s not a 9-to-5 job. It’s 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

When asked about his favorite part of serving as Town President, his answer reflected his dedication to the community.

“My favorite part of my job is helping people and helping the animals,” Dominick said. “One of the first things I did was build a no-kill shelter, and to me that’s important.”

Wanting to make the day even more memorable, President Dominick brought gifts for the students, including Town of Cicero shirts, fidget spinners, balls, and bubbles. The giveaways added to the excitement and helped create an unforgettable experience for the children.

The event also featured members of the Cicero Police Department and the Cicero Fire Department, who helped make Career Day both educational and fun. Students were thrilled to receive special sticker badges and proudly served as “police officers for the day,” creating smiles throughout the school.

School staff expressed their appreciation for President Dominick, Deputy Schullo, the Cicero Police Department, and the Cicero Fire Department for taking time to engage with students and share their experiences in public service.

Career Day at Sherlock Elementary proved to be more than just a presentation—it was an opportunity for students to ask questions, dream big, and learn firsthand about leadership and service from someone who has dedicated more than five decades to the Town of Cicero.

Most importantly, it was a fun and memorable day that left students feeling inspired and reminded them that with hard work, dedication, and a commitment to helping others, anything is possible.

El Presidente Larry Dominick Inspira a los Futuros Líderes Durante el Día de las Profesiones en la Escuela Primaria Sherlock

CICERO, IL – Fue un día lleno de aprendizaje, alegría e inspiración cuando el Presidente del Municipio de Cicero, Larry Dominick, visitó la Escuela Primaria Sherlock el pasado 18 de mayo para participar en el Día de las Profesiones y compartir con los estudiantes su trayectoria de toda una vida dedicada al servicio público.

Acompañado por el Subjefe Dominic Schullo del Departamento de Policía de Cicero, el Presidente Dominick pasó la mañana conversando con estudiantes de cuarto grado y kínder sobre liderazgo, gobierno, seguridad pública y lo que significa servir a la comunidad.

Desde el momento en que llegó, el Presidente Dominick logró conectar con los estudiantes a través de historias, humor y consejos sinceros. Compartió su propia trayectoria, explicando que comenzó a trabajar para el Municipio de Cicero en 1970 en el Departamento de Obras Públicas antes de convertirse en oficial de policía de Cicero en 1984. Con el paso de los años, ascendió en las filas hasta convertirse en Primer Subjefe de Policía antes de postularse y ser elegido Presidente del Municipio.

Otro estudiante preguntó qué tan difícil es crear una ley.

“Es muy difícil”, explicó Dominick, hablando sobre la gran cantidad de trabajo, planificación y colaboración que se requiere para tomar decisiones que impactan a toda una comunidad.

Cuando le preguntaron cuál es la parte más importante de su trabajo, el Presidente Dominick respondió sin dudar.

“La seguridad”, dijo. “Creo en tener un cuerpo policial fuerte porque mantener seguros a nuestros residentes siempre es nuestra prioridad principal.”

Los estudiantes también quisieron saber de qué se siente más orgulloso como Presidente del Municipio.

“De muchas cosas”, respondió Dominick. “Hemos logrado muchísimo.”

Mencionó las numerosas mejoras y desarrollos que se han realizado en Cicero, incluyendo proyectos de infraestructura, desarrollo económico, programas comunitarios, iniciativas de seguridad pública, mejoras en parques e inversiones en escuelas y vecindarios que continúan fortaleciendo a la comunidad.

Un estudiante le preguntó si él aprueba los edificios que se construyen en la comunidad.

“Sí”, respondió. “Miren esta escuela. Es una gran escuela.”

Los estudiantes de kínder quedaron especialmente sorprendidos cuando el Presidente Dominick explicó que el Municipio de Cicero administra y mantiene un presupuesto anual de aproximadamente 200 millones de dólares.
