Food outreach to help needy families in coronavirus pandemic

Officials of the Town of Cicero, Cicero Police, The Cicero Clergy Committee, Cicero Community Outreach program, Parent Patrols, and other non-Profit Organizations distributed food on Monday to more than 300 needy families impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ismael Vargas, chairman of the Clergy Committee, said that each family received a large bag of food that was donated from many different sources.

Vargas said the packages were distributed at the Salvation Army in their parking lot, 2337 S. Laramie Avenue, by volunteers wearing COVID-19 safety protections.

“We gathered a group of volunteers to organize a food give-a-way this morning to families in need,” Vargas said.

“We had 40 volunteers help us distribute the food all wearing protective face masks and gloves. More than 300 needy families came to pick up the food which was in bags that were handed to each person at the distribution site at the Salvation Army parking lot at 2337 S. Laramie Avenue.”

Vargas praised all of the organizations who helped and said that the food give-a-way will continue each month.

“This effort will continue every first Monday of the month until the end of the pandemic,” Vargas said.

“It was important because it shows how we are all coming together to serve the community. It shows the people that we really do care for them. We are very sensitive about what is happening and we want to serve them especially those in need.”

The food is distributed to families on a first come, first serve basis at each event, Vargas said.

“We want to thank everyone that was able to come out yesterday and unite together to help with the Produce Mobile Food Pantry that was hosted by the Salvation Army Templo Laramie Corps. With all of your help we were able to serve 300+ families!” Vargas said.
