Residents who have the misfortune of losing their pet may contact us for help in locating their animal and bringing it home safely. Our team is committed to reuniting lost pets with their families whenever possible.
If the animal is wearing a collar with identification tags or has a registered microchip, we will make every effort to notify the owner right away. Owners have seven days to claim their pet once it has been taken into our care. If you do not pick up your pet within these seven days, the animal will become the property of the Town of Cicero. The seven-day holding period includes weekends and holidays.
If a pet comes into our facility without any form of identification and no owner contacts us to report the animal missing, the animal will be held for four days as a courtesy to pet owners. This four-day period also includes weekends and holidays. We want nothing more than to reunite these animals with their families whenever possible. Pets that are not claimed within the four or seven-day holding period will then be prepared for adoption through the Cicero Waggin’ Tails Shelter. We also partner with many rescue organizations to give animals the best chance of finding a new loving home.
We do not believe in euthanizing any pet unless it is absolutely necessary. Only animals that are suffering severe pain or are near death will be humanely put down.
