The Town of Cicero is moving forward with another major investment in its water infrastructure, launching Phase Two of its ongoing Water Main Improvement Project to deliver stronger water pressure, enhanced fire protection and safer, more reliable service for residents.

The latest phase is underway along 31st Street from 54th Avenue to 49th Avenue, where the Town will install a larger water main, new fire hydrants and approximately 130 new residential water service lines.

“This is a huge project,” said Lido Manetti, Water Commissioner for the Town of Cicero. “We’re upsizing our water main. We’re making it larger, and that’s going to help improve the water pressure for all the residents here. We’re also installing all new fire hydrants, which will help with fire protection for this whole area, which is a big plus.”

One of the most important components of the project is the continued removal of aging lead service lines. Homes with existing lead service lines will receive new copper service lines at no cost to the homeowner. The new lines will be a minimum of one inch in diameter, providing an additional upgrade to the Town’s water delivery system.

“We’re going to be replacing [lead service lines] free of charge for the residents and putting in an upsized, minimum one-inch copper line into the house at no cost to the residents,” Manetti said. “It’s a wonderful project to get started, free of charge to the residents.”

The project will begin with installation of the new water main and fire hydrants, followed by connections to individual homes. The Town expects the section between 54th Avenue and Laramie Avenue to be completed first, before crews continue east toward 49th Avenue.

Town President Larry Dominick and Town officials joined Manetti at the project site, along with Business License Director Ismael Vargas and Tony Del Ricco of Riccio Construction Corp., the contractor hired to complete the project. Del Ricco was on site with the project’s blueprints as officials reviewed the work and upcoming construction plans.

“This is what investing in Cicero looks like,” said Town President Larry Dominick. “We are building for the future and making the improvements our residents deserve. This project will strengthen our water system, improve fire protection and help eliminate lead service lines, all while providing these important upgrades to our residents at no cost to them. This is a tremendous investment in our beautiful Town of Cicero and another example of our commitment to building a safer, stronger and better community.”

The project will also bring new water meters to homes included in the work. The updated meters will allow readings to be collected electronically as Town personnel travel through the neighborhood, improving the efficiency and accuracy of the meter-reading process.

Because approximately 130 homes will need to be accessed during the project, the Town’s Building and Water Departments have already begun contacting residents and conducting inspections. Residents will receive notices with additional information regarding when access to their homes will be required.

“We’ll have to do a lot of digging,” Manetti explained. “It’s just going to be a little disruptive. People are going to have to work with the Town. We will have to go into basements, and anything that we take apart, we put back together.”

Once underground construction is complete, crews will restore affected areas, including concrete and landscaping.

The Town is also coordinating closely with Cicero School District 99, as Columbus East and Columbus West schools are located within the project area. Construction schedules will be shared with the district to help minimize disruptions for students, families and school traffic.

Residents should expect some temporary parking and traffic disruptions as crews excavate streets and connect homes to the new system. Construction zones and parking restrictions will be clearly marked.

Weather will also be an important factor, particularly as the project continues into the winter months. Officials are working to maintain the construction schedule while avoiding leaving streets or service areas exposed during periods of extreme cold or heavy snow.

Manetti said the Town hopes to complete the entire project within approximately six months, with the first section from 54th Avenue to Laramie Avenue expected to move quickly.

“We’re going to continue yearly with projects here and there,” Manetti said. “It should really be a big help for the quality of our water system.”

Phase Two represents another significant step in Cicero‘s long-term effort to modernize its infrastructure, improve water service and continue replacing lead service lines throughout the community.

For residents, the project means a stronger water system, improved fire protection, upgraded meters and safer water service — with these major improvements being provided at no cost to participating homeowners.

Cicero Avanza con una Importante Modernización del Sistema de Agua

El Municipio de Cicero continúa avanzando con otra importante inversión en su infraestructura de agua potable, dando inicio a la Fase Dos de su Proyecto de Mejoramiento de las Líneas Principales de Agua, con el objetivo de aumentar la presión del agua, fortalecer la protección contra incendios y brindar un servicio más seguro, confiable y moderno a los residentes.

Esta nueva fase se está llevando a cabo a lo largo de la calle 31, desde la avenida 54 hasta la avenida 49, donde el Municipio instalará una línea principal de agua de mayor capacidad, nuevos hidrantes contra incendios y aproximadamente 130 nuevas líneas de servicio de agua residenciales.

“Este es un proyecto enorme”, dijo Lido Manetti, Comisionado del departamento de Agua del Municipio de Cicero. “Estamos aumentando el tamaño de nuestra línea principal de agua. La estamos haciendo más grande, y eso ayudará a mejorar la presión del agua para todos los residentes de esta zona. El proyecto también llevará nuevos medidores de agua a las viviendas incluidas en los trabajos. Los medidores actualizados permitirán recopilar las lecturas electrónicamente mientras el personal del Municipio recorre las calles, mejorando la eficiencia y precisión del proceso de lectura de medidores.

Debido a que aproximadamente 130 viviendas necesitarán acceso durante el proyecto, los Departamentos de Construcción y Agua del Municipio ya comenzaron a comunicarse con los residentes y a realizar inspecciones. Los residentes recibirán avisos con información adicional sobre cuándo será necesario tener acceso a sus viviendas.

“Vamos a tener que excavar bastante”, explicó Manetti. “Será un poco incómodo. Los residentes tendrán que trabajar en coordinación con el Municipio. Tendremos que entrar a los sótanos y cualquier cosa que desmontemos, la volveremos a instalar.”

Una vez finalizados los trabajos subterráneos, los equipos restaurarán las áreas afectadas por la construcción, incluyendo el concreto y el paisajismo.

El Municipio también está trabajando estrechamente con el Distrito Escolar 99 de Cicero, ya que las escuelas Columbus East y Columbus West se encuentran dentro del área del proyecto. Los horarios de construcción serán compartidos con el distrito para ayudar a minimizar las interrupciones para los estudiantes, las familias y el tráfico escolar.

Los residentes deben esperar algunas interrupciones temporales en el estacionamiento y el tráfico mientras los equipos excavan las calles y conectan las viviendas al nuevo sistema. Las zonas de construcción y las restricciones de estacionamiento estarán claramente señalizadas.

El clima también será un factor importante, especialmente a medida que el proyecto continúe durante los meses de invierno. Los funcionarios están trabajando para mantener el calendario de construcción y, al mismo tiempo, evitar dejar calles o áreas de servicio expuestas durante períodos de frío extremo o fuertes nevadas.

Manetti señaló que el Municipio espera completar todo el proyecto en aproximadamente seis meses, y que la primera sección, desde la avenida 54 hasta la avenida Laramie, avanzará rápidamente.
