The Town of Cicero came together to honor the brave men and women who have served our country during a special Veterans Barbecue hosted by Town President Larry Dominick, the Board of Trustees, and the President’s Office for Military Families.

Held at the Cicero Town Hall Courtyard, the celebration brought together veterans from different generations, active-duty service members, military families, community leaders, and residents for an afternoon of gratitude, fellowship, food, and patriotism.

The event opened with a prayer from Town Chaplain Ismael Vargas, who reminded those gathered that the freedoms Americans enjoy every day should never be taken for granted.

“We were blessed to wake up this morning and go about our daily lives. We should never take that for granted,” Vargas said. “The reason we are able to do so is because of the men and women who chose to serve and sacrifice for each one of us.”

Chaplain Vargas prayed for those who have served, those who are no longer with us, and those currently serving around the world, asking God to continue watching over them as they protect the freedoms that allow families to live, work, and gather together.

Tom Tomschin, Executive Director of the Town of Cicero Housing Department, welcomed guests and thanked President Dominick for organizing the celebration.

“Looking around today, I see veterans from every generation, and I also see young children who may one day choose to serve our country and proudly wear the uniform,” Tomschin said. “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your service.”

Among the veterans attending was Tom Tomschin Sr., the father of Housing Department Executive Director Tom Tomschin, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969.

“It was a difficult time, but I made it through,” Tomschin Sr. said. “I’m grateful to be here and grateful to be home. This is the greatest country in the world, and I truly appreciate everything being done for us today.”

Vietnam veteran Larry Portnoff also reflected on the importance of being recognized alongside fellow veterans.

“I can’t speak for everyone, but for me it’s an honor to be recognized for what we did and the sacrifices we made,” Portnoff said. “No matter which branch we served in, we’re proud of our service.”

Portnoff added that beginning the celebration with prayer made the event especially meaningful.

“This feels like a family gathering, and it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.

The barbecue also connected Cicero’s veterans with a younger generation of service members.

Marine Arturo Paz, a Cicero native and Morton East graduate, returned to the community where he grew up while serving in the United States Marine Corps. Paz enlisted in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and recently marked six years of service.

“When you’re younger, you dream about where life will take you,” Paz said. “Looking back at everything I’ve accomplished and the person I’ve become, it’s a bittersweet moment, especially being back in the town where I grew up.”

Paz was trained by the Marines as a diesel mechanic and later served in North Carolina and California. He now works as a recruiter, giving him an opportunity to give back to his community and guide the next generation.

“Talk to recruiters from every branch and learn about all the opportunities available,” Paz said. “Even if you don’t think it’s for you, explore your options so you can make the best decision for your future.”

Trustee Blanca Vargas, whose nephews have served in the Air Force, Army, and Marines, also spoke about the importance of honoring military service.

“Our servicemen and women fight to protect our freedoms, and they deserve to be honored,” Vargas said. “That’s why events like today’s Veterans Barbecue are so important.”

President Larry Dominick emphasized that Cicero’s commitment to its veterans and military families is ongoing.

“There is no greater responsibility we have as a community than to remember and honor the men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our country and our freedoms. Our veterans should never have to wonder whether their community appreciates them. In Cicero, we will always stand with our veterans, our active-duty service members, and their families.”

The event was organized by Toni C. Sweatman, Director of the President’s Office for Military Families, whose office works to support Cicero’s military families.

“This celebration is about more than a barbecue. It is about bringing our military families together, honoring the sacrifices of our veterans, and making sure they know that they are never alone. We are incredibly grateful for every person who has worn the uniform, and we want our veterans and their families to know that Cicero will always be here to support them.”

Throughout the afternoon, veterans, active-duty service members, families, and residents shared food, stories, laughter, and fellowship.

The Veterans Barbecue served as a reminder that honoring veterans means remembering their sacrifices, supporting their families, listening to their stories, and teaching future generations about the meaning of service.

From Vietnam veterans who served decades ago to Marines serving today, the celebration brought together generations united by a commitment to protecting and serving their country.

The Town of Cicero extends its sincere gratitude to every veteran and active-duty service member who attended, as well as to their families and everyone who helped make the celebration possible.

Cicero Honra a los Veteranos y Familias Militares en un BBQ Especial

El Municipio de Cicero se reunió para honrar a los valientes hombres y mujeres que han servido a nuestro país durante un especial BBQ para Veteranos, organizado por el Presidente del Municipio Larry Dominick, la Junta Directiva y la Oficina del Presidente para Familias Militares.

Celebrado en el patio del Ayuntamiento de Cicero, el evento reunió a veteranos de diferentes generaciones, miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas en servicio activo, familias militares, líderes comunitarios y residentes para disfrutar de una tarde de gratitud, compañerismo, comida y patriotismo.

El evento comenzó con una oración del Capellán del Municipio, Ismael Vargas, quien recordó a los presentes que las libertades que disfrutamos todos los días nunca deben darse por sentadas.

“Fuimos bendecidos al despertar esta mañana y continuar con nuestras vidas cotidianas. Nunca debemos dar eso por sentado”, dijo Vargas. “La razón por la que podemos hacerlo es gracias a los hombres y mujeres que decidieron servir y sacrificarse por cada uno de nosotros.”

El Capellán Vargas oró por quienes han servido, por aquellos que ya no están con nosotros y por quienes actualmente sirven alrededor del mundo, pidiendo a Dios que continúe protegiéndolos mientras defienden las libertades que permiten a las familias vivir, trabajar y reunirse.

Tom Tomschin, Director Ejecutivo del Departamento de Vivienda del Municipio de Cicero, dio la bienvenida a los invitados y agradeció al Presidente Dominick por organizar la celebración.

“Al mirar a mi alrededor hoy, veo veteranos de cada generación, y también veo niños pequeños que algún día podrían decidir servir a nuestro país y portar orgullosamente el uniforme”, dijo Tomschin. “Gracias, desde el fondo de mi corazón, por su servicio.”

Entre los veteranos presentes estuvo Tom Tomschin Sr., padre del Director Ejecutivo del Departamento de Vivienda, Tom Tomschin, quien sirvió en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos durante la Guerra de Vietnam de 1968 a 1969.

“Fue una época difícil, pero salí adelante”, dijo Tomschin Sr. “Estoy agradecido de estar aquí y agradecido de haber regresado a casa. Este es el mejor país del mundo y realmente aprecio todo lo que están haciendo por nosotros hoy.”

El veterano de Vietnam Larry Portnoff también reflexionó sobre la importancia de ser reconocido junto a otros veteranos.

“No puedo hablar por todos, pero para mí es un honor ser reconocido por lo que hicimos y los sacrificios que hicimos”, dijo Portnoff. “Sin importar en qué rama servimos, estamos orgullosos de nuestro servicio.”

Portnoff agregó que comenzar la celebración con una oración hizo que el evento fuera especialmente significativo.

“Esto se siente como una reunión familiar, y es algo hermoso”, dijo.

El BBQ también conectó a los veteranos de Cicero con una nueva generación de miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas.

El Marine Arturo Paz, residente de Cicero y graduado de Morton East, regresó a la comunidad donde creció mientras sirve en el Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos. Paz ingresó al servicio en 2020 durante la pandemia de COVID-19 y recientemente cumplió seis años de servicio.

“Cuando eres joven, sueñas con saber hacia dónde te llevará la vida”, dijo Paz. “Al mirar todo lo que he logrado y la persona en la que me he convertido, es un momento agridulce, especialmente al estar de regreso en el Municipio donde crecí.”

Paz recibió entrenamiento como mecánico diésel por parte de los Marines y posteriormente sirvió en Carolina del Norte y California. Actualmente trabaja como reclutador, lo que le permite retribuir a su comunidad y orientar a la próxima generación.

“Hablen con los reclutadores de cada rama y conozcan todas las oportunidades disponibles”, dijo Paz. “Aunque piensen que no es para ustedes, exploren sus opciones para poder tomar la mejor decisión para su futuro.”

La Síndica Blanca Vargas, cuyos sobrinos han servido en la Fuerza Aérea, el Ejército y los Marines, también habló sobre la importancia de honrar el servicio militar.

“Nuestros hombres y mujeres en las Fuerzas Armadas luchan para proteger nuestras libertades y merecen ser honrados”, dijo Vargas. “Por eso eventos como el BBQ de Veteranos de hoy son tan importantes.”

El Presidente Larry Dominick destacó que el compromiso de Cicero con sus veteranos y familias militares continúa.

“No existe una responsabilidad más grande que tenemos como comunidad que recordar y honrar a los hombres y mujeres que han sacrificado tanto para proteger a nuestro país y nuestras libertades. Nuestros veteranos nunca deberían preguntarse si su comunidad los aprecia. En Cicero, siempre estaremos al lado de nuestros veteranos, nuestros miembros militares en servicio activo y sus familias.”

El evento fue organizado por Toni C. Sweatman, Directora de la Oficina del Presidente para Familias Militares, cuya oficina trabaja para apoyar a las familias militares de Cicero.

“Esta celebración es mucho más que un BBQ. Se trata de reunir a nuestras familias militares, honrar los sacrificios de nuestros veteranos y asegurarnos de que sepan que nunca están solos. Estamos profundamente agradecidos con cada persona que ha vestido el uniforme y queremos que nuestros veteranos y sus familias sepan que Cicero siempre estará aquí para apoyarlos.”

Durante toda la tarde, veteranos, miembros militares en servicio activo, familias y residentes compartieron comida, historias, risas y compañerismo.

El BBQ de Veteranos sirvió como un recordatorio de que honrar a nuestros veteranos significa recordar sus sacrificios, apoyar a sus familias, escuchar sus historias y enseñar a las futuras generaciones el significado del servicio.

Desde los veteranos de Vietnam que sirvieron hace décadas hasta los Marines que sirven hoy, la celebración reunió a generaciones unidas por el compromiso de proteger y servir a su país.

El Municipio de Cicero extiende su sincero agradecimiento a cada veterano y miembro militar en servicio activo que asistió, así como a sus familias y a todos los que ayudaron a hacer posible esta celebración.
