The Town of Cicero proudly celebrated the 57th Annual International Houby Festival this past weekend, a beloved tradition that brought together families, friends, and neighbors for four days of community spirit, culture, and fun.

The festival kicked off on Thursday, October 2, and ran through Sunday, October 5, filling the Cicero Fairgrounds with live music, delicious food, carnival rides, and the vibrant energy that makes Houby Fest one of Cicero’s most anticipated annual celebrations. True to its name—Houby is the Czech and Slovak word for mushrooms—the festival celebrates the rich culinary and cultural traditions of these communities, including the famous mushroom dishes that have delighted generations of Cicero residents.

The highlight of the weekend was the International Houby Day Parade, which took place on Sunday, October 5, beginning at noon. Under absolutely beautiful, sunny skies, thousands of spectators lined the streets to cheer on more than 100 parade participants—including schools, community organizations, cultural groups, and local businesses—each showcasing their pride and creativity. Many floats and groups paid tribute to the festival’s namesake, featuring giant mushroom decorations, mushroom-themed costumes, and even mushroom-themed music and dances.

Leading the parade was Town President Larry Dominick, accompanied by his wife, First Lady Mrs. Diana Dominick, who rode atop the Special Events Fire Truck and waved to residents along the route. Their presence underscored the strong sense of unity and tradition that defines the annual Houby celebration.

“It’s wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate the rich traditions that make Cicero unique,” said President Larry Dominick. “Houby Festival is more than a celebration of our Czech and Slovak roots—it’s a reminder of the pride, diversity, and spirit that bring all of us together as one Cicero family.”

Also joining in the festivities were Town Assessor Emo Cundari, Trustees Victor Garcia, Blanca Vargas, Bob Porod, John Cava, and Town Supervisor Joe Virruso, who proudly represented the Town of Cicero and greeted residents throughout the parade.

Originally founded to celebrate the rich Czech and Slovak heritage in Cicero, the Houby Festival has grown over the decades to honor the town’s vibrant diversity while keeping its roots firmly in the mushroom traditions that inspired it. From fresh mushroom dishes to mushroom-themed arts and crafts, the festival is a unique cultural touchstone that brings the community together each fall.

With its colorful floats, community pride, perfect fall weather, and of course, mushrooms at the center of it all, this year’s celebration was another memorable reminder of what makes Cicero such a special place to call home.

El Municipio de Cicero celebró con orgullo el 57.º Festival Internacional Houby este pasado fin de semana, una tradición muy querida que reunió a familias, amigos y vecinos durante cuatro días de espíritu comunitario, cultura y diversión.

El festival comenzó el jueves 2 de octubre y se extendió hasta el domingo 5 de octubre, llenando los terrenos de la feria de Cicero con música en vivo, deliciosa comida, juegos mecánicos y la energía vibrante que hace del Houby Fest una de las celebraciones anuales más esperadas de Cicero.

Fiel a su nombre—Houby es la palabra checa y eslovaca para hongos—el festival celebra las ricas tradiciones culinarias y culturales de estas comunidades, incluyendo los famosos platos con hongos que han deleitado a generaciones de residentes de Cicero.

El momento culminante del fin de semana fue el Desfile Internacional del Día de Houby, que se llevó a cabo el domingo 5 de octubre a mediodía. Bajo un cielo soleado y perfecto, miles de espectadores se alinearon en las calles para animar a más de 100 participantes del desfile—incluyendo escuelas, organizaciones comunitarias, grupos culturales y negocios locales—cada uno mostrando orgullo y creatividad. Muchos carros alegóricos y grupos rindieron homenaje al símbolo del festival, con grandes decoraciones de hongos, disfraces temáticos y hasta música y bailes relacionados con los hongos.

Encabezando el desfile estuvieron el Presidente del Municipio Larry Dominick y su esposa, la Primera Dama Diana Dominick, quienes recorrieron la ruta en el Camión de Bomberos para Eventos Especiales saludando a los residentes. Su presencia destacó el fuerte sentido de unidad y tradición que caracteriza la celebración anual de Houby.

“Es maravilloso ver a nuestra comunidad unirse para celebrar las ricas tradiciones que hacen a Cicero único,” dijo el Presidente Larry Dominick. “El Festival Houby es más que una celebración de nuestras raíces checas y eslovacas: es un recordatorio del orgullo, la diversidad y el espíritu que nos unen a todos como una sola familia de Cicero.”

También participaron en las festividades el Asesor del Municipio Emo Cundari, los Síndicos Victor Garcia, Blanca Vargas, Bob Porod, John Cava y el Supervisor del Municipio Joe Virruso, quienes representaron con orgullo al Municipio de Cicero y saludaron a los residentes a lo largo del desfile.

Originalmente fundado para celebrar la rica herencia checa y eslovaca de Cicero, el Festival Houby ha crecido a lo largo de las décadas para reflejar la diversidad vibrante del municipio, al tiempo que conserva sus raíces en las tradiciones relacionadas con los hongos que lo inspiraron. Desde platos frescos con hongos hasta artesanías temáticas, el festival es un punto de encuentro cultural único que une a la comunidad cada otoño.
