The Cicero Community Center was filled with color, music, and heartfelt remembrance on Sunday, November 2, 2025, as families, friends—and even their pets—came together to celebrate Día de Los Muertos.

Hosted by Town President Larry Dominick, the Board of Trustees, and the Department of Special Events, this year’s event offered a full afternoon of activities honoring loved ones who have passed, while celebrating the rich cultural traditions that bring the community together.

“This year we tried to do a little more for Day of the Dead,” said Patti Sturdevant, Special Events Director. “We have a few different activities, inflatables, hot chocolate, and popcorn. We also hosted a Pet Parade where people could show off their dogs and cats, and register or renew their pet tags with the Town of Cicero.”

The celebration included something for everyone: sugar skull painting, arts and crafts, pony rides, the Coco movie screening, and the community ofrenda—where residents placed photos and offerings in honor of loved ones.

“Our community and culture celebrate Día de Los Muertos as a major event,” Sturdevant added. “District 99 and District 201 partnered with us, and we wanted to give families something fun to do before the weather gets bad.”

The Pet Parade was a highlight of the afternoon, drawing cheers and laughter as animals dressed in handmade costumes paraded through the community center. “The kids especially love the Pet Parade,” said one organizer. “Some of the animals even showed up in costume.”

Families attending expressed their appreciation for the event’s cultural and emotional significance.
“We wanted to celebrate Día de Los Muertos and show our daughter what it’s about,” said one parent, dressed in costume with her child.
Another guest shared, “This is such a great event that helps keep our culture alive. It’s important for our children to learn about traditions that are part of our roots and to remember those who are no longer with us.”

Children also joined in the spirit of the day, many wearing colorful flower crowns or traditional attire. One young participant proudly said, “It’s a day to remember people who passed away.”

A pet owner reflected on the importance of the occasion: “We’re celebrating my grandfather, who passed away three years ago. I think it’s amazing that the Town of Cicero is honoring the Latino community with this event—it really represents who we are.”

The celebration ended with smiles, laughter, and the joyful Pet Parade—a reminder that Día de Los Muertos is not only about remembrance, but also about celebrating life.

Cicero Celebra la Vida, el Amor y la Tradición en el Día de Los Muertos

El Centro Comunitario de Cicero se llenó de color, música y emotivos recuerdos el domingo 2 de noviembre de 2025, cuando familias, amigos —y hasta sus mascotas— se reunieron para celebrar el Día de Los Muertos.

El evento, organizado por el Presidente Municipal Larry Dominick, la Junta Directiva y el Departamento de Eventos Especiales, ofreció una tarde llena de actividades para honrar a los seres queridos que han fallecido, mientras se celebraban las ricas tradiciones culturales que unen a la comunidad.

“Este año quisimos hacer un poco más para el Día de Los Muertos,” comentó Patti Sturdevant, Directora de Eventos Especiales. “Tuvimos varias actividades, inflables, chocolate caliente y palomitas. También organizamos un Desfile de Mascotas donde las personas pudieron mostrar a sus perros y gatos, y registrar o renovar sus placas de mascotas con el Municipio de Cicero.”

La celebración tuvo algo para todos: pintura de calaveras de azúcar, manualidades, paseos en pony, la proyección de la película Coco y una ofrenda comunitaria donde los residentes colocaron fotos y ofrendas en honor a sus seres queridos.

“Nuestra comunidad y nuestra cultura celebran el Día de Los Muertos como un evento muy importante,” agregó Sturdevant. “Los Distritos 99 y 201 se unieron a nosotros, y queríamos ofrecerles a las familias algo divertido antes de que llegue el mal clima.”

El Desfile de Mascotas fue uno de los momentos más destacados de la tarde, llenando el centro comunitario de aplausos y risas mientras los animales desfilaban con disfraces hechos a mano. “A los niños especialmente les encanta el Desfile de Mascotas,” comentó una de las organizadoras. “Algunos animales incluso llegaron disfrazados.”

Las familias asistentes expresaron su entusiasmo y agradecimiento por el valor cultural y emocional del evento.
“Queríamos celebrar el Día de Los Muertos y mostrarle a nuestra hija de qué se trata,” dijo una madre, vestida con su hija para la ocasión.
Otra persona comentó: “Este es un evento maravilloso que ayuda a mantener viva nuestra cultura. Es importante que nuestros hijos aprendan sobre las tradiciones que forman parte de nuestras raíces y recuerden a quienes ya no están con nosotros.”

Los niños también se unieron al espíritu del día, muchos luciendo coronas de flores coloridas o vestimenta tradicional. Una pequeña participante dijo con orgullo: “Es un día para recordar a las personas que ya fallecieron.”

Una dueña de mascota reflexionó sobre el significado de la celebración: “Estamos recordando a mi abuelo, quien falleció hace tres años. Me parece increíble que el Municipio de Cicero honre a la comunidad latina con este evento — realmente representa quiénes somos.”

La celebración concluyó entre sonrisas, risas y el alegre Desfile de Mascotas — un recordatorio de que el Día de Los Muertos no solo se trata de recordar, sino también de celebrar la vida.
