A team of Morton East students placed second in the Illinois Institute of Technology Raspberry Pi challenge for their smart backpack design. The competition started in February with a formal application, a YouTube video detailing the project and a project design, all evaluated by judges from IIT. Throughout Illinois hundreds of children participate in a number of Special Olympics events. The sponsoring organization, Special Olympics Illinois, works hard to provide opportunities for athletes with developmental disabilities to compete in a variety of track-and-field events. Near record crowds flooded Cicero’s fair grounds at the beginning of May to kick off the warm-weather slate of festivals in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Cicero residents, civic groups and other organizations canvassed town streets on May 13 to help in the annual Cicero Clean-Up Day event. Every May, as the weather warms up, Cicero volunteers gather together to help with the Keep Cicero CLEAN initiative.
