The Town of Cicero held a meaningful Presidents Day celebration on February 17, 2026, hosted by Morton College, bringing together community leaders, educators, students, and residents to honor presidential leadership and reflect on the values that continue to shape the nation.

Serving as master of ceremonies, Town Reporter Alejandra Herrera welcomed attendees on behalf of the Town of Cicero and the Cicero Media Department, emphasizing that Presidents Day is not only a time to honor the nation’s past leaders, but also an opportunity to reflect on democracy, resilience, unity, and civic responsibility.

A major highlight of the event was the strong partnership between the Town of Cicero and Morton College. Special recognition was given to the college for opening its doors and collaborating to host the celebration, including the support of Ms. Joanna Martin from Morton College’s President’s Office. Officials noted that partnerships with educational institutions play a vital role in strengthening community engagement, promoting civic learning, and inspiring future leaders.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Cicero Town President Larry Dominick, First Lady and Media Director Diana Dominick, Town Trustee Blanca Vargas, staff of State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes, and members of the community, including residents from the Cicero Senior Center and Seguin. The celebration also welcomed representatives and students from School Districts 99 and 201.

A central part of the program featured student speakers from District 99 and District 201, who shared thoughtful reflections on leadership, civic responsibility, and the role of presidents in shaping the nation.

Unity Junior High School Humanities teacher Katherine Silis introduced two remarkable students, Ana Fuentes Maldonado and Deyli Gonzaga Bahena, who spoke about the meaning of leadership and the importance of standing up for moral and ethical principles. Their presentations referenced influential historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malala Yousafzai.

Deyli Gonzaga Bahena emphasized: “To me, leadership is having the will to stand up against those who violate our moral and ethical rights — and being willing to take a stand for others.”

District 201 was represented by Morton High School students Edison Gonzalez and Jesus Cabrera III, introduced by social science teacher Marlo Rohde. Cabrera shared his perspective on civic engagement and presidential responsibility: “We are all leaders in our own way, and we can be presidents in our own environments. Whether it’s speaking up at Town Hall or participating in our schools, our voices can make a difference.”

The celebration also featured a keynote address by Dr. Michael D. Kasprowicz, a longtime Morton College faculty member who teaches Western Civilization, Anthropology, American History, and Ethics. A dedicated educator, Dr. Kasprowicz shared his knowledge of history and civic engagement, inspiring attendees to reflect on the importance of leadership, education, and service in shaping society. He reminded the audience: “Leadership, civic responsibility, and service remain at the heart of our nation’s strength.”

As the program concluded, organizers extended their appreciation to the student presenters, educators, and Morton College for their partnership and continued support. Special recognition was also given to the Cicero Media Department, including First Lady Diana Dominick, the Media Director, and staff members who helped organize the event.

The Presidents Day celebration concluded with an invitation for attendees to remain for lunch, leaving participants with a renewed appreciation for leadership, civic responsibility, and service. El Municipio de Cicero celebró una significativa conmemoración del Día de los Presidentes el 17 de febrero de 2026, organizada por Morton College, reuniendo a líderes comunitarios, educadores, estudiantes y residentes para honrar el liderazgo presidencial y reflexionar sobre los valores que continúan dando forma a la nación.
