On Wednesday, June 11, Cicero Town Hall blossomed with community spirit as hundreds of residents gathered for a free tree giveaway event hosted by the Town of Cicero, in partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The initiative was made possible through the leadership of Town President Larry Dominick, Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias, Cicero Water Department Commissioner Lido Manetti, and the support of the Town Board.
Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias, explained the inspiration behind the event.
“We were hearing from residents, through President Dominick, that many of their trees were sick and had to be removed,” said Punzo-Arias. “We know how important trees are to our ecosystem—they provide shade, fresh air, and support our environment. So together with the Water Reclamation District, President Dominick, and the Board, we decided to bring in over 200 trees to give away to residents, completely free of charge.”
In addition to the giveaway, residents were encouraged to register for a tree planting assistance program through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) office, located at 1634 South Laramie. Once registered, town staff will visit the homes and help plant the trees for those who need support.
Punzo-Arias added, “It’s a wonderful way to care for our environment, and what better way to teach our children about sustainability than by planting a tree?”
Lisa Wieczorek from the Cicero Water Department also joined the conversation, sharing the broader goals behind the initiative. “It’s all of the above—beautification, environmental impact, and shade,” she said. “Trees help cool the area, clean our air, and they simply make everything look better. Instead of just having concrete everywhere, trees bring life.”
She also credited Water Commissioner Manetti for helping organize the logistics of the event. “He was really involved in ordering the trees, coordinating everything, and focusing on the beautification aspect. He couldn’t be here today, but this event definitely has his mark on it.”
To ensure fairness and allow as many families as possible to participate, residents were limited to one tree per household. A sign-in sheet helped organizers keep track of participants and allowed them to follow up with care instructions via email.
The event was recognized as a meaningful gesture—not just for current residents, but for the future of the community as well.

Cicero organiza entrega gratuita de árboles para promover la conciencia ambiental y embellecer la comunidad
El miércoles 11 de junio, el Ayuntamiento de Cicero se llenó de entusiasmo comunitario durante un evento especial de entrega gratuita de árboles, organizado por el Municipio de Cicero en colaboración con el Distrito Metropolitano de Reclamación de Agua de Chicago. La iniciativa fue posible gracias al liderazgo del Presidente Municipal Larry Dominick, la Secretaria Municipal Maria Punzo-Arias, el Comisionado Lido Manetti del Departamento de Agua de Cicero y el apoyo de la Junta Municipal.
La Secretaria Municipal Maria Punzo-Arias, explicó la inspiración detrás de esta actividad.
“Nos dimos cuenta, gracias a los comentarios de los residentes y del Presidente Dominick, que muchos árboles en los hogares estaban enfermos y tuvieron que ser removidos,” explicó Punzo-Arias. “Sabemos lo importantes que son los árboles para el ecosistema—dan sombra, aire fresco y ayudan al medio ambiente. Así que, junto con el Distrito de Reclamación de Agua, el Presidente Dominick y la Junta, decidimos traer más de 200 árboles para regalar a nuestros residentes completamente gratis.”
Además de la entrega, se invitó a los residentes a inscribirse en un programa de asistencia para plantar árboles, a través del programa CDBG en la oficina ubicada en el 1634 South Laramie. Una vez registrados, personal del municipio visitará los hogares para ayudar con la siembra del árbol, si así lo requieren.
Punzo-Arias agregó: “Es una forma maravillosa de cuidar nuestro medio ambiente, y no hay mejor manera de enseñarles a nuestros hijos sobre sostenibilidad que plantando un árbol.”
Lisa Wieczorek del Departamento de Agua de Cicero también compartió su perspectiva sobre los objetivos de la iniciativa. “Es todo eso—embellecimiento, impacto ambiental y sombra,” comentó. “Los árboles ayudan a mantener más fresco el entorno, purifican el aire y simplemente hacen que todo se vea mejor. En lugar de solo cemento, los árboles traen vida.”
Lisa también agradeció al Comisionado de Agua Manetti por su participación en la organización del evento. “Él estuvo muy involucrado en ordenar los árboles, coordinar todo y asegurarse de que la estética fuera una prioridad. Lamentablemente no pudo estar presente hoy, pero este evento definitivamente lleva su sello.”
Para asegurar que más familias pudieran beneficiarse, se estableció un límite de un árbol por hogar. También se pidió a los participantes que firmaran una hoja de registro para poder enviarles información por correo electrónico sobre cómo cuidar el árbol.
El evento fue reconocido como un gesto significativo, no solo para los residentes actuales, sino también para el futuro de la comunidad.
