Cicero Officers Honored with Illinois Medal of Honor
Cicero Police Officers Luis Martinez and Reynol Ramos of the Special Operations Division have been awarded the prestigious Illinois Law Enforcement Medal of Honor for their extraordinary bravery during a violent encounter late last year that left Officer Martinez wounded. The officers were formally recognized during a ceremony held on May 29, 2025, in Springfield, Illinois.
The recognition stems from a harrowing incident in the early morning hours of December 21, 2024, near 35th Street and 61st Court in Cicero. While on routine patrol, Officers Martinez and Ramos approached a vehicle that was double-parked. After advising the driver to move along, what appeared to be a standard interaction quickly escalated into a life-threatening confrontation.
As the officers prepared to leave the scene, a man who had been speaking with someone in the vehicle suddenly pulled out a firearm and opened fire. Officer Martinez, who was behind the wheel, was struck in the back.
Despite his serious injury, Officer Martinez managed to reverse the squad car back toward the scene in an attempt to regain control. Officer Ramos, who was unharmed, sprang into action—rendering immediate aid to his wounded partner while calmly calling for backup and relaying vital information about the fleeing suspect’s identity and location.
Thanks to their swift coordination, the suspect—identified as a known gang member—was quickly tracked to a nearby bar and apprehended without further incident. He now faces two counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer.
Officer Martinez was hospitalized following the attack and has since returned home, where he continues to recover.
In addition to the state’s highest law enforcement honor, both officers were previously recognized by the 100 Club of Chicago with the Medal of Valor on April 8, 2025, for their heroism.
“The actions of Officers Martinez and Ramos went far beyond the call of duty,” said Cicero Police Superintendent Thomas Boyle. “Their bravery, composure under pressure, and loyalty to one another exemplify the very best of our department.”
Superintendent Boyle added:
“I’m incredibly proud of the bravery and selflessness that Cicero Tactical Officers Luis Martinez and Reynol Ramos exhibited on December 21, 2024. They demonstrated extreme composure under fire. Their professional response led to the capture of the offender and the immediate administering of life-saving trauma aid to Officer Martinez.
“Receiving the Illinois Law Enforcement Medal of Honor is not only a tremendous personal recognition for each officer, but it’s also a reflection of the values we uphold as a department. Their actions in the face of extreme danger are an example of what police officers do daily. A true example of what it means to serve and protect. This recognition is so well deserved. As a department, we are honored to stand with Officer Martinez and Officer Ramos as they are celebrated for their courage and sacrifice.”
Cicero Town President Larry Dominick also praised the officers’ bravery and called for stronger legal protections for first responders:
“We’re incredibly proud of Officers Martinez and Ramos. Their actions remind us why it’s so important to support the men and women who put on the badge every day to protect our community,” said President Dominick. “This recognition is well deserved. Cicero stands behind our officers, and this event only reinforces our commitment to keeping our town safe.”
In addition, President Dominick emphasized the need for tougher laws:
“We have to toughen the laws for anyone who points or fires a weapon at our first responders,” he said. “If you attack a police officer or firefighter, you’re attacking the safety of the entire community—and the consequences must reflect that.”
The Illinois Law Enforcement Medal of Honor is the highest award given by the State of Illinois to officers who distinguish themselves through acts of exceptional bravery while facing extreme risk. Officers Martinez and Ramos now join a select and honored group of law enforcement professionals whose courage has left a lasting impact on the communities they serve.

El oficial Martínez fue hospitalizado tras el ataque y desde entonces ha regresado a casa, donde continúa recuperándose.
