In celebration of Earth Day, Cicero Town President Larry Dominick planted a young tree in the neighborhood. The tree is part of the larger green initiative—a free tree program available to residents. With a shovel in hand and a smile on his face, President Dominick shared the deeper meaning behind the event.
“This helps the air quality and all of it,” he said. “We cut down trees that are dead so they don’t fall on cars or houses. But a nice young tree like that—let’s hope it lives 50, 100 years. We’re planting trees all over.”
The initiative, funded partly by a grant, is designed to beautify the community while addressing important environmental concerns such as stormwater absorption and urban heat. President Dominick emphasized that trees do more than look nice—they play a significant role in managing flooding, especially during Cicero’s frequent heavy storms.
“People like flowers and trees. A mixed area just looks better. We’re here to make this town the best we can,” he said, mentioning upcoming community events, including Cicero’s Cinco de Mayo Festival and a town-wide clean-up week.
Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias and Town Trustee Victor Garcia joined Dominick and echoed the program’s importance.
“It’s a special day because not only is it Earth Day, but it’s important that we continue to have programs like this,” said Punzo-Arias. “Trees are vital—they produce oxygen, provide shade, help with heating and cooling costs, and most importantly, they absorb water. With the flooding issues we’ve experienced in Cicero, it’s essential to replace any trees that are removed due to disease or age.”
She encouraged residents to contact the town to take advantage of the program: “Know that we’re here to work together and to serve our community.”
Garcia noted the visible impact of tree loss in some neighborhoods. “You can see the empty spots on this block. We need more trees, not just here but across the whole town. Everything is positive when you have a tree in front of your house,” he said. “We want residents to know they can call us directly so we can follow up and make sure they get their tree.”
As the new tree took root, so did a renewed sense of community and environmental responsibility in Cicero. Through this program, the town hopes to continue growing—not just trees but pride and connection among its residents.

En conmemoración del Día de la Tierra, el Presidente Municipal de Cicero, Larry Dominick, plantó un árbol joven en el vecindario que ahora forma parte del nuevo programa ambiental del Municipio: un programa que ofrece árboles gratis a los residentes que no tienen uno frente a su casa.
“Esto ayuda a la calidad del aire y a todo en general,” expresó el Presidente Dominick mientras colocaba tierra alrededor del árbol recién plantado. “Quitamos los árboles que están muertos para que no se caigan sobre los autos o las casas. Pero un árbol joven como este, esperemos que viva 50, 100 años. Estamos plantando árboles por todo el municipio.”
El programa, que cuenta con el apoyo de un subsidio, tiene como objetivo embellecer la comunidad y al mismo tiempo abordar preocupaciones ambientales como las inundaciones y el calor urbano. Dominick destacó que los árboles no solo embellecen las calles, sino que también absorben grandes cantidades de agua durante las tormentas, ayudando a prevenir inundaciones, un problema frecuente en Cicero.
“A la gente le gustan las flores y los árboles. Un área con vegetación se ve mejor. Estamos aquí para hacer que este municipio sea lo mejor posible,” añadió, mientras anunciaba que se acercan eventos comunitarios importantes como el Festival del Cinco de Mayo y la semana de limpieza comunitaria.
La Secretaria Municipal, Maria Punzo-Arias, y el Síndico Municipal, Victor Garcia, también participaron en la actividad y compartieron la importancia del programa.
“Es un día especial no solo porque es el Día de la Tierra, sino porque es importante continuar con programas como este,” dijo Punzo-Arias. “Los árboles son esenciales—producen oxígeno, dan sombra, ayudan a reducir el costo de electricidad y calefacción, y sobre todo, absorben el agua de lluvia. Con las fuertes tormentas que hemos tenido en Cicero, es muy importante reemplazar los árboles que se han quitado por enfermedad o vejez.”
Animó a los residentes a que llamen al municipio para aprovechar esta oportunidad: “Estamos aquí para trabajar juntos y servir a nuestra comunidad.”
Por su parte, el Síndico Victor Garcia resaltó que en muchas cuadras ya se nota la falta de árboles. “Se ven los espacios vacíos. Necesitamos más árboles, no solo en esta área sino en todo Cicero. Como dijo Maria, todo es positivo cuando tienes un árbol frente a tu casa. Invitamos a los residentes a llamarnos directamente para poder darles seguimiento y que reciban su árbol.”
Mientras el árbol comenzaba a echar raíces, también florecía un renovado compromiso con el medio ambiente y la comunidad en Cicero. A través de este programa, el municipio espera seguir creciendo—no solo en árboles, sino también en orgullo y conexión entre sus residentes.
