Cicero promotes 3 Firefighters, announces major awards for police

The Town of Cicero Fire Department announced the promotions of three Firefighters and several awards recognizing the bravery of several Cicero Police Officers at its board meeting on Tuesday.

Given promotions were Lt. Bradley Erickson to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief, Engineer Joshua Novinger to the rank of Lieutenant, and Firefighter Jonathan Marcolioni to the rank of Engineer.

Awards were also announced for three police officers including one injured during a confrontation with gang members last December.

After swearing in the fighters to their new ranks, Fie Chief Jeff Penzkofer said, “I have no doubt in my mind that these three individuals, it’s a big day for them to get promoted to a higher rank. And I have no doubt that they’ll be protecting the town of Cicero and the community for years to come. Thank you everybody.”

Town President Larry Dominick echoed the board’s pride in the service of the firefighters, saying, “We do have a best Fire Department. That’s why I gave you a ten-year contract. Now I have to work on the Police contract. Congratulations. This is well deserved. Our Cicero Firefighters and Cicero Police are the most important people to our community. And I want to thank you for all the hard work you do, and the way you are so brave. As an ex-policeman, I know what it takes.  So thank you for being here for the town and God bless all these.”

After Penzkofer swore in Erickson, Novinger and Marcolioni to their new ranks, Police Chief Thomas Boyle and First Deputy Luis Gutierrez announced that three of their police personnel will be honored for their service with prestigious awards.

Boyle said the first award is for Police detective Edgar Alba which will be presented by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police conference to be held on April 25.

“This award for Detective Edgar Alba is for ‘Investigator of the Year’ and it will be awarded to Detective Alba who is with our Detective Bureau,” Boyle said.

“He was nominated by the Detective Division for this award, and we submitted it to the Illinois Association to Chiefs of Police, and it was bestowed on, or will be bestowed on him on April 25th of this year at the Illinois Association Chiefs of Police Annual Conference. It’s an incredibly prestigious award to be named ‘Investigator of the Year’.”

Gutierrez added that the award to Alba is very prestigious.

“Only one person in the entire state that gets that award, and for the first time it is being presented to a detective from the Town of Cicero,” Gutierrez told board members.

Gutierrez then announced that two Cicero Police Officers, Luis Martinez and Reynol Ramos will each receive the “100 Club Valor Award” and the “Illinois Law Enforcement Medal of Honor” for the injury and for exemplary bravery.

Martinez had been shot by suspects during a confrontation at 31st and 61st Avenues on December 7, 2024 in Cicero. The suspect was later arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder. Those awards will be presented in Springfield by the Illinois State Police on May 29.

“During the early morning hours of December 7th, 2024, these officers were on patrol plain clothes. I, and they saw a vehicle parked double parked on 35th Street and 61st Avenue, as they told them that, that they couldn’t double park. They were leaving. And one of the individuals that was talking to one of the persons in the double-parked car opened fire striking Officer Luis Martinez in the back. Officer Ray Ramos immediately began to render aid,” Gutierrez said, noting Martinez is still recovering from his injuries.

“They provided information regarding the offender, and he was taken into custody pretty quickly at a nearby bar. Officer Martinez is still recovering from his injuries, and this individual that was taken into custody was a known gang member here in town.”

Cicero promueve a 3 bomberos y anuncia premios importantes para la policía

El Departamento de Bomberos del Municipio de Cicero anunció la promoción de tres bomberos y reconocimientos por actos de valentía a varios oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Cicero durante la reunión de la junta del martes.

Recibieron promociones: el teniente Bradley Erickson al rango de Subjefe de Bomberos, el ingeniero Joshua Novinger al rango de Teniente, y el bombero Jonathan Marcolioni al rango de Ingeniero.

También se anunciaron premios para tres oficiales de policía, incluyendo uno que resultó herido durante un enfrentamiento con miembros de una pandilla en diciembre pasado.

Después de tomar protesta a los bomberos en sus nuevos rangos, el Jefe de Bomberos Jeff Penzkofer dijo:
“No tengo ninguna duda de que estos tres elementos… hoy es un gran día para ellos al recibir su ascenso. Y estoy seguro de que seguirán protegiendo al municipio de Cicero y a nuestra comunidad por muchos años más. Gracias a todos.”

El Presidente Municipal Larry Dominick compartió el orgullo del consejo por el servicio de los bomberos, diciendo:
“Tenemos al mejor Departamento de Bomberos. Por eso les di un contrato de diez años. Ahora me toca trabajar en el contrato de la Policía. Felicidades, se lo merecen. Nuestros bomberos y policías de Cicero son lo más importante para nuestra comunidad. Les agradezco todo el esfuerzo y el valor con el que hacen su trabajo. Como ex policía, sé lo que implica. Así que gracias por estar aquí para el municipio y que Dios los bendiga a todos.”

Después de la toma de protesta de Erickson, Novinger y Marcolioni, el Jefe de Policía Thomas Boyle y el Subjefe Luis Gutiérrez anunciaron que tres elementos de su corporación serán galardonados por su servicio con premios de gran prestigio.

Boyle dijo que el primer reconocimiento será para el detective Edgar Alba, el cual será entregado durante la conferencia de la Asociación de Jefes de Policía de Illinois el 25 de abril.

“Este reconocimiento al detective Edgar Alba es como ‘Investigador del Año’ y será otorgado a Alba, quien forma parte de nuestra División de Detectives,” explicó Boyle.
“Fue nominado por su propia división y enviamos la propuesta a la Asociación de Jefes de Policía de Illinois, quienes le otorgarán el premio el 25 de abril de este año durante su conferencia anual. Es un premio muy importante, ser nombrado ‘Investigador del Año’.”

Gutiérrez agregó que el premio a Alba tiene gran relevancia.
“Solo una persona en todo el estado recibe ese reconocimiento, y por primera vez se lo dan a un detective del municipio de Cicero,” comentó ante los miembros del consejo.

Gutiérrez también anunció que los oficiales de policía Luis Martínez y Reynol Ramos recibirán el “Premio al Valor del Club 100” y la “Medalla de Honor al Cumplimiento de la Ley de Illinois” por su valentía ejemplar, uno de ellos tras resultar herido.

Martínez recibió un disparo durante un enfrentamiento el 7 de diciembre de 2024 en las avenidas 31 y 61 en Cicero. El sospechoso fue detenido y acusado de dos cargos de intento de homicidio. Los premios serán entregados por la Policía Estatal de Illinois en Springfield el 29 de mayo.

“Durante la madrugada del 7 de diciembre de 2024, estos oficiales estaban patrullando de civil. Vieron un vehículo estacionado en doble fila en la calle 35 y la avenida 61. Cuando se acercaron a decirles que no podían estar así, estaban por retirarse, y uno de los individuos que hablaba con los ocupantes del coche disparó, hiriendo al oficial Luis Martínez por la espalda. El oficial Ray Ramos actuó de inmediato para darle primeros auxilios,” relató Gutiérrez, señalando que Martínez aún se está recuperando de sus heridas.

“Dieron información sobre el atacante, y fue arrestado poco después en un bar cercano. Este sujeto era un conocido miembro de una pandilla de la zona.”
