Seniors Celebrate Hearts and Shamrocks Event with Community Leaders

The Cicero Senior Center was filled with warmth and excitement as community members gathered for the annual Hearts and Shamrocks celebration, an event that blended the spirit of Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. The event brought seniors together to share friendship, joy, and cherished moments, while local leaders expressed their appreciation for the community.
Senior Center Director Diana Dominick opened the event with heartfelt remarks.
“Dear friends and members of our community, it is an honor to welcome you all to our beautiful Hearts and Shamrocks celebration, an event that brings us all together to share friendship, happiness, and unforgettable moments,” she said. “The fortune isn’t just found in four-leaf clovers. It is found in the friends we share our light with, in the smiles we exchange, and in the memories we create together.”
She went on to thank those who made the event possible, including District 99, the Seniors Committee, Senior Center employees Princess, Isabella and Lupita. Dominick also expressed her gratitude to Cicero Town President Larry Dominick and the Board of Trustees for their ongoing support. “They have been very supportive to this senior center and are running for re-election today. We wish them luck,” she added.
Longtime Cicero resident Mario Castaneda shared his personal journey and admiration for the town’s progress under President Dominick’s leadership. “Since 2005, when President Larry was elected, a regular town became an industrial metropolitan town that offered so many opportunities for employment and family betterment,” he said. “I became a first-time homeowner in Cicero at 23, and the town’s programs, like the residential flood control program, have been invaluable.”
Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias emphasized the town’s commitment to its seniors. “President Dominick has made major improvements, ensuring funding is still available for programs for seniors and kids. Under his leadership, Cicero has attracted major businesses, making our community stronger and safer,” she said.
Town Trustee Victor Garcia highlighted the importance of events like Hearts and Shamrocks. “Every time we see seniors getting together for special events, it’s meaningful. Some of them don’t have family nearby, so gatherings like these help them reconnect with friends, enjoy great food, and meet new people,” he said. “The town has improved over the years, making Cicero a safer and better place to live.”
President Larry Dominick reaffirmed his dedication to the safety and well-being of Cicero’s seniors. “It makes me happy any time we can help the seniors. My number one goal is safety for everybody,” he said. “When I took office in 2005, we had 33 gangs; now we’re down to nine or ten, and we’re fighting hard to eliminate them. Our new state-of-the-art crime center has already solved two homicides, and other towns want to see what we’re doing because we’re on the right track.”
Town Collector Fran Reitz praised the impact of the event and the administration’s commitment to senior services. “We’ve been having this Hearts and Shamrocks dance under Larry’s administration. It means a lot that he continues to fund departments providing services to seniors, from activities to snow removal, ensuring a better quality of life for them,” she said.
Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar also joined the festivities, expressing his gratitude for the event’s organizers.
“I just want to thank President Larry Dominick and the Board of Trustees. They always put together a great program for the seniors, and we’re having a wonderful time,” he said.
The Hearts and Shamrocks event once again proved to be a joyful gathering, reinforcing the importance of community and companionship in Cicero. As the celebration came to a close, seniors left with smiles and the raffle prizes won, laughter, and a renewed sense of connection within their beloved town.

El Centro de Adultos Mayores de Cicero se llenó de calidez y entusiasmo el 12 de febrero de 2025, cuando miembros de la comunidad se reunieron para la celebración anual de Corazones y Tréboles, un evento que combinó el espíritu del Día de San Valentín y el Día de San Patricio. El evento reunió a los adultos mayores para compartir amistad, alegría y momentos especiales, mientras que los líderes locales expresaron su aprecio por la comunidad.
La directora del Centro de Adultos Mayores, Diana Dominick, inauguró el evento con emotivas palabras.”Queridos amigos y miembros de nuestra comunidad, es un honor darles la bienvenida a nuestra hermosa celebración de Corazones y Tréboles, un evento que nos une para compartir amistad, felicidad y momentos inolvidables”, dijo. “La fortuna no solo se encuentra en los tréboles de cuatro hojas. Se encuentra en los amigos con quienes compartimos nuestra luz, en las sonrisas que intercambiamos y en los recuerdos que creamos juntos”.
Dominick continuó agradeciendo a quienes hicieron posible el evento, incluyendo al Distrito 99, el Comité de Adultos Mayores y los empleados del Centro de Adultos Mayores: Princess, Isabella y Lupita. También expresó su gratitud al presidente municipal de Cicero, Larry Dominick, y a la Junta Directiva por su continuo apoyo.”Han sido un gran respaldo para este centro de adultos mayores y hoy están en plena campaña de reelección. Les deseamos suerte”, agregó.
El residente de Cicero desde hace muchos años, Mario Castañeda, compartió su trayectoria personal y su admiración por el progreso del municipio bajo el liderazgo del presidente Dominick.”Desde 2005, cuando el presidente Larry fue elegido, un municipio común se convirtió en un municipio industrial y metropolitano que ofreció muchas oportunidades de empleo y mejoras para las familias”, dijo. “Me convertí en propietario de mi primera vivienda en Cicero a los 23 años, y los programas del municipio, como el programa de control de inundaciones residenciales, han sido invaluables”.
La secretaria municipal, María Punzo-Arias, enfatizó el compromiso del municipio con los adultos mayores.”El presidente Dominick ha realizado mejoras importantes, asegurando que la financiación continúe disponible para programas dirigidos a adultos mayores y niños. Algunos no tienen familia cerca, por lo que estas reuniones les ayudan a reconectar con amigos, disfrutar de buena comida y conocer nuevas personas”, expresó. “El municipio ha mejorado a lo largo de los años, haciendo de Cicero un lugar más seguro y mejor para vivir”.
El presidente Larry Dominick reafirmó su compromiso con la seguridad y el bienestar de los adultos mayores de Cicero.”Me hace feliz cada vez que podemos ayudar a los adultos mayores. Mi principal objetivo es la seguridad para todos”, dijo. “Cuando asumí el cargo en 2005, había 33 pandillas; ahora estamos reducidos a nueve o diez, y estamos luchando arduamente para eliminarlas. Nuestro nuevo centro de delitos de última tecnología ya ha resuelto dos homicidios, y otros municipios quieren ver lo que estamos haciendo porque vamos por el camino correcto”.
La recolectora municipal, Fran Reitz, elogió el impacto del evento y el compromiso de la administración con los servicios para adultos mayores.”Hemos realizado este baile de Corazones y Tréboles bajo la administración de Larry. Es significativo que continúe financiando los departamentos que brindan servicios a los adultos mayores, desde actividades hasta la remoción de nieve, asegurando una mejor calidad de vida para ellos”, comentó.
El comisionado del condado de Cook, Frank Aguilar, también se unió a la celebración, expresando su gratitud a los organizadores del evento.”Quiero agradecer al presidente Larry Dominick y a la Junta de Fideicomisarios. Siempre organizan un gran programa para los adultos mayores, y estamos pasando un momento maravilloso”, dijo.
El evento Corazones y Tréboles demostró una vez más ser una reunión alegre, reforzando la importancia de la comunidad y el compañerismo en Cicero.
