“Shop with a Cop” Event Spreads Holiday Cheer

The holiday spirit was in full swing on Saturday, December 21, as the Town of Cicero hosted its annual “Shop with a Cop” event at Walmart. Starting at 9 a.m., local police officers partnered with children from the community to make their holiday wishes come true.

Officers and children began the day by sharing breakfast together, allowing time to chat and get to know one another. This was followed by a collaborative shopping experience where officers helped children select items on their wish lists. These activities were designed to foster connections, strengthen trust, and create unforgettable memories, highlighting the value of positive community-police relationships.

“The history is very deep here,” shared Deputy Schullo, a Cicero police officer who has been part of this program for all of his 18 years on the force. “With the support of President Larry Dominick and the town board, we’ve been able to give back to the community and ensure kids in need have a special Christmas. This year, thanks to increased donations, we’re at a record high with 40 children participating.”

Each child was paired with a police officer and given a Walmart gift card to shop for items they needed or wanted. The event was about more than just gifts; it was an opportunity to build positive relationships between children and law enforcement. “It starts with the children knowing that the police are good guys,” Deputy Schullo emphasized. “That’s the stepping stone to building a great community.”

Walmart’s Cicero store manager, Guy Lambesis, played a key role in organizing the event. “This is our fifth year hosting,” he said. “The employees get so excited about this—they’ve been preparing for weeks. This store has become the busiest Walmart in the Midwest because of this incredible community.”

Community sponsors, including ExxonMobil, Alden Manor, AB Current Technologies, McDonald’s, and MFS Financial, also contributed significantly to the event’s success. Superintendent of Police Tom Boyle expressed gratitude, noting, “Without their support, we couldn’t make this happen. This event allows us to bring joy to children and families while strengthening community bonds.”

“This is one of the greatest community outreach events we do,” Superintendent Boyle remarked. “It’s all positive, all the time. And that’s what makes it so special.”

President Larry Dominick, a long-time supporter of “Shop with a Cop,” highlighted its importance. “It’s a great feeling to see kids’ faces light up. Life is about helping people, and this event embodies that spirit.”

Families expressed heartfelt appreciation for the program. One mother shared, “My kids were so excited to wake up and come here. This means so much to us during a hard time. Thank you to President Dominick and the police officers for making this possible.”

For the officers, the event was equally rewarding. “Seeing kids pick out items not just for themselves but for their families—it’s incredibly moving,” Deputy Schullo said. “This is what the holidays are about: giving back and appreciating how fortunate we are.”

Part of the program includes surprising some shoppers by paying for their bill—the Town of Cicero was able to bless two shoppers this year.

The event concluded with families, officers, and Santa gathering for a grand photo, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Parte del programa incluye sorprender a algunos compradores pagando sus cuentas; este año, el Municipio de Cicero pudo bendecir a dos compradores.

El evento concluyó con familias, oficiales y Santa Claus reunidos para una gran foto, deseando a todos una Feliz Navidad y un Próspero Año Nuevo.
