Clergy Committee Hosts Annual Christmas Appreciation Brunch for Cicero Fire Department

The Clergy Committee and the Town of Cicero hosted their annual Christmas Appreciation Brunch for the Cicero Fire Department on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 12 p.m. The event, held at the Cicero Firehouse located at 5303 W. 25th Street, honored the dedication and sacrifices of the firefighters who serve and protect the community.
The luncheon is part of a cherished tradition, which also includes an annual appreciation event for the police department. This gathering provided an opportunity for firefighters to share a meal with clergy members and town officials, including Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias and Trustee Blanca Vargas.
Town Chaplain Ismael Vargas emphasized the heartfelt purpose behind the event. “We as clergy members don’t want this to feel like just a yearly custom,” Vargas explained. “It’s truly from our hearts to recognize the work you do for our community. You put yourselves in harm’s way while others are running from danger. This is our small way of showing love, gratitude, and appreciation.”
Chaplain Vargas also reflected on the sacrifices firefighters make during the holiday season. “It’s important to always remember our first responders, especially during the holidays,” he said. “You’re out there answering calls, putting yourselves in dangerous situations, and sacrificing time with your families. This is our way of acknowledging your hard work and letting you know how much we value your service.”
Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias shared her gratitude for the fire department and all first responders. “It is always important to remember our first responders because they are always there when we need them,” she said. “I am very thankful for our Town Chaplain Vargas, all of our clergy members, and all of our first responders.”
Trustee Blanca Vargas also emphasized the significance of the fire department’s role in keeping the community safe. “Let’s thank our Fire Department every time we see them because we are protected by them,” she said. “We need to have a safe town.”
The event highlighted not only the bravery of the firefighters but also their humanity. “Beyond the uniform, you are fathers, sons, uncles, and even grandfathers,” Chaplain Vargas said. “This appreciation brunch is a reminder that the community stands with you, recognizing your humanity and the sacrifices you make.”
With the support of the Clergy Committee, Town leadership, and other community members, the annual Christmas Appreciation Brunch will continue to serve as a testament to Cicero’s gratitude for its first responders.

El Comité de Clero y el Municipio de Cicero organizaron su Almuerzo Anual de Apreciación Navideña para el Departamento de Bomberos de Cicero el martes 10 de diciembre de 2024 a las 12 p.m. El evento, que se llevó a cabo en la estación de bomberos de Cicero, ubicada en el 5303 W. 25th Street, rindió homenaje a la dedicación y los sacrificios de los bomberos que sirven y protegen a la comunidad.
El almuerzo es parte de una tradición apreciada que también incluye un evento anual de reconocimiento para el Departamento de Policía. Este encuentro ofreció a los bomberos la oportunidad de compartir una comida con miembros del clero y funcionarios del municipio, incluidos la Secretaria Municipal María Punzo-Arias y la Sindica Blanca Vargas.
El Capellán Municipal Ismael Vargas destacó el propósito sincero del evento. “Como miembros del clero, no queremos que esto se sienta como una costumbre anual,” explicó Vargas. “Es realmente de corazón que reconocemos el trabajo que hacen por nuestra comunidad. Se ponen en peligro mientras otros huyen del peligro. Esta es nuestra pequeña manera de mostrar amor, gratitud y aprecio.”
El Capellán Vargas también reflexionó sobre los sacrificios que los bomberos hacen durante la temporada navideña. “Es importante recordar siempre a nuestros primeros respondedores, especialmente durante las fiestas,” dijo. “Ustedes están ahí respondiendo llamadas, enfrentando situaciones peligrosas y sacrificando tiempo con sus familias. Esta es nuestra manera de reconocer su arduo trabajo y hacerles saber cuánto valoramos su servicio.”
La Secretaria Municipal María Punzo-Arias expresó su gratitud hacia el departamento de bomberos y todos los primeros respondedores. “Siempre es importante recordar a nuestros primeros respondedores porque siempre están ahí cuando los necesitamos,” dijo. “Estoy muy agradecida con nuestro Capellán Municipal Vargas, todos los miembros del clero y todos nuestros primeros respondedores.”
La Sindica Blanca Vargas también subrayó la importancia del papel del departamento de bomberos en mantener segura a la comunidad. “Agradezcamos a nuestro Departamento de Bomberos cada vez que los veamos porque ellos nos protegen,” dijo. “Necesitamos un municipio seguro.”
El evento destacó no sólo la valentía de los bomberos, sino también su humanidad. “Más allá del uniforme, ustedes son padres, hijos, tíos e incluso abuelos,” añadió el Capellán Vargas. “Este almuerzo de apreciación es un recordatorio de que la comunidad está con ustedes, reconociendo su humanidad y los sacrificios que hacen.”
