Volunteers and local officials stood by as residents came into Cicero’s Community Center to donate cash and checks. It was part of an effort by the town to help alleviate the financial losses that have occured in the small Central American nation this year.
The Guatemalan fundraiser featured live music, activities for the kids, and other opportunities for residents to show their support for the victims of Volcán de Fuego that erupted in June. It is the latest in a series of fundraisers where the town has unified to help victims of national disasters, including last year’s Hurricane Maria that wrecked Puerto Rico and the earthquake that leveled Mexico City.
“I can’t help but be proud of our residents getting together to help those in need, even when they don’t live nearby,” said Town President Larry Dominick.
