Town President Larry Dominick and the Board of Trustees partnered with the Office of Special Events to celebrate Lithuania’s Independence and the American Presidency during a special ceremony on Feb. 19 at the Cicero Community Center. The event featured remarks by Mantvydas Bekešius, the Consul General for Lithuania’s Consulate in Chicago.
The packed event focused on the commemoration of the 101st anniversary of the Act of Independence of Lithuania, establishing the State of Lithuania after World War I when the Germans occupied the Lithuanian territories of the Russian Empire. To celebrate the independence then, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Lithuanian-Americans brought traditional pastries to share with residents.
The celebration included a moment to recognize George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two American presidents born in February.
