A number of Cicero families will have a merrier Christmas this year thanks to the Cicero Police Department. At the annual “Shop with a Cop” program, held in early December this year, select children were able to tell their Santa cops what they wanted for Christmas this year, giving the police a chance to purchase the items from Cicero’s Target at 2901 S. Cicero.
Dozens of officers helped more than 30 families who have been struggling throughout the year, according to Cicero Superintendent Jerry Chlada, Jr. Police trailed the children – bubbling with excitement – as they set out to select their toys, games, and other desired items that they hoped Santa would deliver.
Chlada said key donations from Target, Mobil Oil on Cicero Avenue, and Terrace Paper, among others, helped make the event a success.
“We want to make sure these kids have a fun Christmas,” he said. “I’m very happy to see everyone getting into the holiday spirit, from the kids running down the aisles to the families relieved their kids are having a Merry Christmas, to the police who really love helping others out.”
Target has opened its doors to the police for this event for the past several years. And while Chlada said he looks forward to the time where it is not necessary to hold the program, he looks forward to continuing the program so the police can continue to “be there to help as many families as we can.”
